The Jack LaLanne Diet - Are You Tough Enough?

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By Alan Cooper There’s no way you can separate the Jack LaLanne diet from the Jack LaLanne lifestyle. And anyone who knows anything about this undisputed Godfather of fitness knows that his lifestyle is definitely not for the faint hearted. Fortunately, there is a way to benefit from his example without being a superman… or woman. I’ll let you in on this simple secret shortly, but first a bit about this super-fit senior’s daily routine He may be over 90, but Jack LaLanne still works out for two hours every morning - an hour every morning lifting weights, followed by an hour’s exercise in the pool. A long-time vitamin enthusiast, LaLanne’s daily diet includes large doses of vitamins from A-Z, as well as minerals and enzymes. And that’s before we start talking food! Could You Give Up Dessert for 76 Years? Jack LaLanne begins each and every day with 50 grams of soy protein. The Jack LaLanne diet is not completely vegetarian, but he doesn’t eat chicken, red meat or white sugar. He gets most of his protein from egg whites, soy protein and occasionally fish. The Jack LaLanne diet is not a low-carb diet, but he does stick strictly to natural grains such as brown rice and whole wheat. LaLanne also eats at least ten fresh, raw vegetables a day. He hasn’t had dessert since 1929 and never eats between meals or after 9 p.m. But What About Us Ordinary Mortals? It would be easy to dismiss Jack LaLanne as a fanatic with little to offer ordinary mortals like you and me. But he has always been the first to point out that his super-strict routine is not for everyone. He says his whole life has been devoted to getting across the message that anyone can improve their physical condition if they really want to and are willing to do something about it. You don’t need to follow a grueling two-hour exercise routine, says LaLanne, but start incorporating more physical activity into your daily life. Stop spending most of your free time slouched in front of the TV. Get out and walk, lift some weights and take a regular swim. Most important, though, is to change what you eat. An early nutritionist mentor of Jack LaLanne’s described humans as “walking garbage cans”. So here’s the simple secret I promised earlier Try the Jack LaLanne Diet … Lite. LaLanne recommends starting out by replacing some of the junk foods we eat with healthier foods. Substitute white bread and white rice with whole grains and brown rice. The “lite” version of the Jack LaLanne diet entails gradually cutting down on the amount of processed food, red meat and poultry we eat, and eating more fish and raw vegetables. Try to eat at least three or four kinds of raw vegetables every day and gradually work your way up to LaLanne’s eight- ten vegetables. A great way to do this without too much effort is to invest in a juicing machine and start experimenting with literally thousands of delicious combinations of fruit and vegetable juice blends. You don’t have to give up desserts, but do cut down. You don’t need dessert after every meal. And when you do eat dessert, try to choose healthier, lower fat options. What about vitamins? Going overboard on vitamins and supplements is expensive and also of questionable value. But there’s no doubt that some supplements will both enhance your nutrition and help you stay energised and motivated in sticking to your weight loss goals. Some supplements may even speed up the weightloss process, but be careful, there’s a lot of hype out there. Alan Cooper is a journalist with 20 year’s experience and the publisher of http://www.ObesityCures.com, a site with the ambitious aim of being a “one-stop-shop” for impartial information on obesity and weight loss solutions - including fad diets, prescription weightloss pills and natural weightloss aids. History Of Peach Trees, Prunus Persica

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Patrick Malcolm Peach trees, Prunus persica, are originally believed to have come from China to the Mideast through the trade routes known to extend to Turkey and Iran (Persia). The peach seeds could be used to plant and grow trees throughout North Africa and Europe and finally were introduced to America in the mid 1500’s. The first appearance of peaches in China may date back to 2000 BC. Historians believe that peach trees were first introduced into the colonial settlements of the United States by the French explorers in 1562 at territories along the Gulf coastal region near Mobile, Alabama, then by the Spaniards who established Saint Augustine, Florida in 1565 on the Atlantic seaboard. The peach trees were planted from peach seed imported from Europe in an effort to establish a self sustaining, agricultural. fruit tree product to feed the colonists. American Indians spread the planting of the peach trees throughout vast territories by transporting the peach seed to other tribes that lived in the interior regions. This new crop of fruit was fast growing, producing a delicious peach two or three years from planting. The trees were so productive and vigorous that sometimes, widespread impenetrable thickets became established from the peach seeds that fell to the ground from fruit unharvested. The illusion was formed by settlers after 1600 that the peach trees were native to the United States, since they were so widely spread and grew so vigorously everywhere. William Bartram, the famous American botanist and explorer, wrote in his book, Travels, in 1773 several accounts of his observations of ancient peach and plum orchards growing in Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama. Bartram visited the ruins of a French plantation in 1776 near Mobile, Alabama, and recorded “I came presently to old fields, where I observed ruins of ancient habitations, there being abundance of peach and fig trees loaded with fruit.” Peach trees are grown primarily as a fruit tree; however, great interest in the non-fruiting, flowering peach tree was shown by President Thomas Jefferson who planted a double flowered tree that spectacularly bloomed at his home in Virginia in 1805. Flowering peach trees rate high, and desirable new cultivars of ornamental peach trees are available for planting and flowering with colors of white, pink, red, and peppermint (a mixture of red and white flower petals). These flowering peach trees are sterile in fruit production and bloom early in the spring, loaded with large colorful clusters of single or double flowered peach petals. Peaches are less popular as a fresh fruit than a few years ago, primarily because most commercial peach cultivars (varieties) are tailored by hybridizers to grow and ship as a firm fruit. The firmness of these peaches is important when a grower considers shipping the peach fruit long distances, but not enough attention has been given by plant hybridizers to saving the ancient qualities of aroma, juiciness, flavor, and seed separation from the pulp. Another problem damaging fresh peach sales is that the labor hired to pick the fruit from the tree is not properly trained nor personally concerned in the ultimate ripening of the peach fruit into a juicy, soft, delicious, tasty peach. The peaches are simply picked too soon and too firm to provide a fruit product that compared to a backyard orchard, tree-ripened delicacy that our older citizens often experienced in their grandfather’s back yard garden. Most of the peaches grown by commercial orchards today are fruits that are harvested while too firm with a seed that clings to the pulp called a “clingstone” peach. The best flavored peaches ripen soft and the seed easily separates from the edible portion, and these are called “freestone” peaches. Peach trees grown in the United States differ greatly from the aggressive, disease resistant, tasty, aromatic fruits grown by the early Americans. Over the centuries, the immune qualities of the peach trees to insects and diseases have been bred out by hybridizers, and these qualities have been replaced by inferior genes that make it difficult to buy a good flavorful peach at the store. The alternative to this problem is to buy tree ripened soft fruit at a fruit stand, pick-your-own orchard, or to grown your own backyard garden peaches concentrating on planting and growing old cultivars of the non-commercial home garden types. Peach trees in America have steadily declined in vigor in the past 300 years, to the point that the life expectancy is only 15-20 years or less. This factor has been explained by some fruit tree observers as due to an array of incremental factors, such as disease and insect weakening of the tree and leaves, nematodes, and improper soils and drainage; however, these problems pre-existed in the environment, when peach trees were introduced into America. The likely explanation of peach tree decline is more probably connected to the weak gene immunity that has appeared in peach tree hybridization focused toward commercial tree production that ends with an early, firm peach, clingstone, with shipping advantages to distant markets. The peach tree grows into a handsome canopy of dark-green rich foliage to a height of 6 to 10 feet. Most peach trees available in the United States are adapted and grown successfully in over 30 states. The grafted semi-dwarf peach trees are self pollinated, even before the flowers fully open, and the tree is cold hardy to negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit; however, the red to pink delicate flowers can be damaged by temperatures below 28 degrees Fahrenheit. Some orchardists like light frosts that will thin the bloom set, producing larger fruit. If extremely heavy flowering occurs, the excess flowers can be removed to 6 inch intervals, or by a chemical thinning that results in a much more marketable crop of fruit. A developing peach can grow in various sizes of individual fruits on the same tree that requires considerable grading before marketing. The peach is covered with a characteristic fuzz that some growers prefer to reduce or removed mechanically before sales. A nectarine is nothing more than a fuzzless peach, even though certain distinct cultivars of nectarines are offered. In his classic 12 volume book of botanical insight in 1921, Luther Burbank in Fruit Improvement believed that the peach had evolved from a nectarine-like ancestor with the fuzz developing as a shield of protection, unlike the fuzzless nectarine. He theorized that the fuzz shielded the fruit from sunshine, moisture, wind, insect, and disease damage. The nectarine, he felt, was repressed by evolutionary restraints, because the nectarine lacked fuzz as a protective armor. The cousin of the nectarine, the almond, was crossed by Burbank in order to create a nectarine fruit with an edible almond pit, thus two crops from one hybridization, a fruit and an edible nut. Burbank also performed many interspecific crosses of peach with nectarine. The peach is quite fragile and subject to bruising if handled roughly. Peach trees require a certain number of chilling hours in order to break dormancy properly and set a good crop of fruit. During a season most States will experience 500 chill hours in the winter; however, in many states, like central and southern Florida, the trees will not fruit properly unless cultivars are planted to fulfill low chilling requirements. It is very important to plant and grow peach trees on well drained soils. The fruit tastes better if trees are planted in the full sun, so that the early morning light will dry the dew on the peach leaves and fruit. Peach trees should be planted 12-15 feet apart in rows and will benefit by the application of lime and phosphate fertilizers around the ground beneath the branches. Weeds will be prevented in backyard orchards by heavily mulching, but otherwise the weeds should be mowed or sprayed with herbicides. Several kinds of peach varieties are usually planted to extend the availability and ripening of the fruit on the trees. Many cultivars are recommended for planting, such as: the Belle of Georgia, Elberta, Hale Haven, Harvester, Indian Blood Cling, Red Haven, Reliance, Gala, May Gold, Southern Pearl, Suwanee, Florida King, Florida Dawn, and many other low chill Florida fruiting cultivars. Peaches contain antioxidants that are important health considerations in maintaining healthy bodies. Many websites that recommend eating pits of peaches or apricots to prevent cancer should be urged to research the fact that the seeds contain a poison organic chemical, cyanogen, which produces fatal cyanide poisoning that has caused sudden death for many people, including Steve McQueen, a famous movie actor of the last century. Peach fruit has been demonstrated to contain healthy portions of Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, and Niacin. Peaches also contain the minerals Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron, and Potassium. Peach trees may be planted in various semi-dwarf sizes and ages for backyard fruit gardens and occasionally larger trees will grow fruit the first year of planting, but small trees usually begin bearing in the third year. What Not To Do When Bass Fishing

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Kat Beechum Here is a list of the 7 things you should NOT do when out fishing for bass: 1. Dont have loud music playing. This vibrates through the boat and rather than attracting the fish, it scares them away. Leave the tunes at home. 2. Dont go to the middle of the lake and drop your line and expect to catch something That is a hit and miss approach. 3. Dont spend lots of money on expensive baits and lures. The cheaper ones work just fine, you just have to now how to use them. 4. Dont give up! Use the techniques in this e-book to help you improve yourself. 5. Dont forget your life jacket! 6. Dont cast your rod until you have practiced on dry land a few times. 7. And lastly, dont forget to have a good time! So, now that you know what not to do, how about getting out on the water and doing some fishing!! Have fun, that is the main thing… also, make sure that you take others with you that enjoy fishing… there is nothing worse than having someone with you on the boat, that after 2 hours of fishing, decides they have had enough and want to go in, just when you are on a roll… this happened to me recently and I was not impressed, I felt like chucking them overboard! So, double check with friends and let them know what they are getting in for when you invite them out for a days fishing… Kat Beechum loves to write! At the moment, her focus is on Bass Fishing as a close friend of hers is somewhat of a pro and is teaching Kat to fish! Asian Ginseng - Medicinal Uses, Interactions, Side Effects, Dosage

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

By Steve Mathew Asian, Chinese, Korean, or “true” ginseng are all common names for Panax ginseng, one of the world’s oldest known herbal medicines. The word Panax, of Greek derivation, means “all-cure” and gives rise to the word panacea. In Chinese, “ginseng” (schinseng) refers to the human-shaped figure of the root, which is believed to suggest powerful properties. White ginseng refers to the unprocessed dried root, while red ginseng refers to the steamed root, which is red or caramel colored. Uses and Benefits: Ginseng has been used for thousands of years in Asian countries to boost energy, relieve stress, improve concentration, and enhance physical and cognitive performance. It is claimed to be a general restorative, tonic, or adaptogen, which restores the body’s balance, enhances stamina, and increases resistance to stress and disease. Among many other claims, ginseng is also recommended as an aphrodisiac, for cardiovascular diseases, to prevent or treat cancers, and to prolong life. In traditional Chinese medicine, ginseng is used to restore the vital life force (qi or chi) in the body. Asian ginseng is considered more stimulating or heating (yang), while American ginseng is considered more calming or cooling (yin). Pharmacology: The triterpene saponins, commonly referred to as ginsenosides, are considered to be the main pharmacologic constituents of P. ginseng. At least 30 of these steroidal compounds have been described, based on their sugar side chains. The most abundant or important ginsenosides are Rg-1, Rg-2, Rb-1, Rb-2, Rc, Rd, and Rf. Like lipid-soluble steroid hormones, ginsenosides may insert into cell membranes and interact with membrane channels and proteins, or transverse the membrane to initiate genomic effects. In addition, polysaccharides, polyacetylenes, and other non-saponin constituents of P. ginseng have pharmacologic activity. Hundreds of in vitro and animal studies, mostly from the Asian and Russian literature, have investigated the biochemical and pharmacologic activities of P. ginseng, and numerous properties have been described. For example, pharmacologic effects on the cardiovascular system (anti-ischemic, antiplatelet, vasodilatory), endocrine system (hypoglycemic, ACTH-stimulating), immune system (immunostimulatory, anti-inflammatory), and nervous system (CNS-stimulating and inhibiting) have been reported. Cytoprotective, cognitive, and anticarcinogenic activities are also alleged. Cytoprotective effects include resistance against ischemia, toxins, oxidation, and radiation. Clinical Trials: Fifty-seven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were found in a systematic review of the worldwide clinical literature, but many have significant methodologic flaws. The Chinese and Russian literatures in particular are unreliable, as methodologic quality, flawed criteria, and publication bias are common oncerns. Therefore, double-blind RCTs in the American and Western European literature with statistically significant results are discussed here. Most of the best RCTs used a European proprietary product (G115, standardized to 4% ginsenosides) as either a mono-preparation or a combination product containing a mixture of vitamins and minerals (sometimes combined with deanol, or dimethylaminoethanol bitartrate) . Physical Performance-Many controlled studies have been reviewed. Eight double-blind RCTs evaluated chronic dosing of standardized ginseng products in volunteers on cycle ergometers Four trials found a significant decrease in heart rate and an increase in maximal oxygen uptake, whereas the other four trials found no improvement. Evaluation of these studies does not suggest that ginseng significantly improves physical performance. Cognitive Functioning-In two separate RCTs, the G115 preparation increased arithmetic calculation ability (without affecting other cognitive skills),16 while a different ginseng product enhanced abstract thinking and auditory reaction times (without affecting memory or concentration)Y The combination G115 product improved cognitive functioning in middle-aged patients with mild memory impairments, but failed to improve cognition in geriatric patients. A combination ginseng/ginkgo preparation had equivocal effects on memory (beneficial effects after the lIlorning dose, but detrimental effects after the afternoon dose). Overall, these studies do not suggest consistent benefits in memory, concentration, and cognitive function. . Quality of Life (QOL)-Several placebo-controlled trials have uvaluated the G115 combination product on overall QOL (i.e., well-being) over several months. One research group found no overall benefits using two QOL questionnaires in healthy adults, and using three QOL scales measuring well-being and menopausal symptoms in perimenopausal women. Benefits were found in certain subsets of questions. Other RCTs also railed to find statistically beneficial effects for QOL, somatic symptoms, and activities of daily living, or mood and affect. In contrast, beneficial effects were reported in two RCTs evaluating the G 115 combination product in stressed or fatigued subjects. In a study of patients diagnosed with “functional fatigue,” a significant decrease in the fatigue score was seen after 6 weeks of treatment. In 625 “stressed or fatigued” adults, QOL was significantly improved compared to the vitamin and mineral components alone. Overall, no consistent benefit on QOL is discerned, although efficacy may be better in “fatigued” patients. Immune Function-Immunologic effects have been evaluated in three RCTs over 2- to 3-month study periods. In healthy Thai students, no changes were found in total and differentialleukocytes, or in lymphocyte subpopulations. In contrast, G115 was reported to increase leukocyte activity, NK cell activity, and T-Iymphocyte quantity and activity in healthy adults. In another RCT of 227 volunteers by the same investigators, G 115 significantly decreased the incidence of colds and flu (13% in the ginseng group vs. 37% in the placebo group), and increased antibody titers. . Endocrine-In an 8-week RCT of 36 type II diabetics, 100 or 200 mg/day of a (presumably Asian) ginseng product improved fasting blood glucose levels and HgA 1 c levels (200-mg dose only) compared to placebo. However, lack of reported data make these study results difficult to analyze. The G 115 product did not affect glucose levels measured as a secondary endpoint in a separate trial of 60 healthy non-diabetics. Significant increases in sperm count and sperm motility, as well as serum testosterone, FSH, and LH levels were reported in one uncontrolled study of 66 men. However, controlled studies have failed to confirm these effects. No hormonal effects were found in an RCT of 384 perimenopausal women with hot flashes, based on estradiol levels, FSH levels, endometrial thickness, and vaginal cytology and pH [22]. Testosterone levels were also unaffected in a 3-month RCT of 90 men with primarily psychogenic erectile dysfunction. Although improvements were reported in subjective erectile functioning, this study did not appear to be double-blinded. . Miscellaneous-Ethanol consumed with 3 g of Korean ginseng decreased serum alcohol levels in one small study, presumably by increasing blood alcohol clearance. In 24 patients with chronic non-viral hepatitis, a 3-month RCT found insignificant effects of the G115 combination product on liver testing. In three epidemiologic studies from Korea, ginseng use was associated with a decreased risk of certain cancers (head and neck, gastrointestinal, liver, pancreas, and lung). Epidemiologic studies cannot confirm causation, however, and all three studies were conducted by the same research group. Adverse Effects: Side effects appear to be mild and uncommon, and are usually similar to placebo in controlled clinical trials. Rare idiosyncratic reactions have been reported, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and cerebral arteritis. Estrogen like properties such as vaginal bleeding and mastalgia have been associated with ginseng use in isolated reports. However, a cause and effect relationship is doubtful, as controlled clinical studies of standardized products have not demonstrated hormonal effects. Many of these reactions are most likely due to adulteration or contamination by unrelated herb or drug products, which has been well described with many Asian herbal medicines. CNS-stimulation and a “ginseng abuse syndrome” (hypertension, nervousness, insomnia, skin eruptions, and morning diarrhea) were described in 10-20% of chronic ginseng users in an uncontrolled survey of psychiatric patients in 1979. These adverse effects have not been observed in controlled studies, and this “syndrome” is probably nonexistent. However, several Asian ginseng supplements have been reported to contain significant amounts of methylxanthines, and CNS-stimulation has been reported with ginseng use in other psychiatric patients. Side Effects and Interactions: Asian ginseng appeared to inhibit the effects of warfarin in one patient, although no interaction could be detected in a rat model. Ginseng combination products were loosely associated with stimulant or manic effects in two patients taking phenelzine, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Overall, interactions do not appear to be a significant concern, but data is limited. Cautions: Adulteration or contamination with drugs (e.g., steroids, stimulants, sedatives), pesticides, and heavy metals has been well described for many Asian herbal medicines, and is a particular concern for pregnant and nursing women. Although caution in using ginseng during pregnancy and breast-feeding is advisable, in a survey of 88 women who consumed ginseng during pregnancy, reproductive outcome was no different than matched controls. No mutagenic, carcinogenic, teratogenic, or adverse reproductive effects are seen in animal models. Preparations & Doses: Ginseng is commercially available as the whole or powdered root, in capsules and tablets, as teas, candies, and in many other forms. In traditional Chinese medicine, 10 g or more may be employed, usually in combination with other herbs. In Western herbal medicine, 1-2 g/day of a crude or powdered root preparation is commonly used.Commercial extract products (standardized to 4% ginsenosides) are usually dosed as 100 mg b.Ld., which is equivalent to about 1 g/day of ginseng rooP The proprietary extract examined in many controlled trials (G115, standardized to 4% ginsenosides) is marketed in the U.S. as Ginsana, and the product combined with vitamins and minerals as Vitasana (Pharmaton Natural Health Products). The American Botanical Council’s Comprehensive Ginseng Evaluation Program recently analyzed 13 commercially available “standardized” Asian ginseng products for lot-to-lot consistency. Most products were reasonably consistent, but the ginsenoside content of a few products was more variable. Summary Evaluation Asian ginseng is claimed to have multiple pharmacologic and clinical effects, most of which have not been established in rigorous controlled trials in the Western literature. Although some controlled studies have reported potential benefits, many others offer contrasting results and thus provide little convincing evidence. The overall evidence does not support claims that Asian ginseng can reliably improve physical performance, cognitive functioning, and quality of life. Beneficial effects on fatigue, diabetes, and viral URIs have been demonstrated in single or limited clinical trials, but in general, the efficacy of Asian ginseng is not established beyond a reasonable doubt for any indication. Side effects appear to be rare.Although millions of people have taken ginseng daily for years, suggesting that it is very benign, adulteration or contamination of Asian ginseng products with unwanted substances is concerning. The Kabbalah of Rosh Hashana: From Tears to Transformation

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Shifra Hendrie CHOOSING G-D At sunset on the eve of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, G-d** will remove some of his light from the world. He will still remain present in a basic way, of course, or the world could not sustain itself. But that presence will be remote, withdrawn. Then He will wait. The next move is ours. At around midday of the holy day, when Jews in every corner of the world acknowledge His sovereignty with prayers and the blowing of the shofar, G-d will once again agree to be our King. He will recommit to His relationship with our world. And when He does so, it will be with an entirely new level of light and power. Entirely new possibilities possibilities that never existed before - will enter the world. We will advance one giant step closer to our ultimate destiny. But the first move has to come from us. We must renew our contract with our Creator if the world is to continue to exist. Once each year, the world must choose G-d. FROM TEARS TO TRANSFORMATION Why the blowing of the shofar, the rams horn? What power does this primitive instrument have to bring down such an intense and essential light? More than a simple horn, the shofar is an instrument of transformation. Its sound is like a heartbroken cry, and its power is the power of tears. Living in a physical world, subject to the many stresses and challenges of life on earth and subjugated to the relentless demands of our body and our ego, we are not even remotely aware of our own true potential. Our soul, with all of its unlimited awareness, insight, creativity, love and power, is trapped and suppressed. But when our defenses break down, when we come face to face with our essential smallness and vulnerability within this vast universe, we cry out to G-d. And this cry this intense awareness of our own limitations is what sets us free. A broken-hearted cry can release your soul from its prison and leave you open to something completely new. This freedom, not coincidentally, is also connected with the trumpet-blast of the shofar. In fact, it is the blast of the great shofar the shofar of Redemption - that will herald our ultimate freedom and transformation at the End of Days. Weakness and power. Smallness and greatness. Isolation and Unity. Slavery and freedom. How do they go together? And how is it that the very same sound can symbolize both? A WORLD OF OPPOSITES Kabbbalah explains that everything that exists is made up of two polar opposites. The opposite of darkness is light. The opposite of evil is good. The opposite of death is life. The opposite of slavery is freedom. Wherever one is found, so is its opposite. They define each other. Without one, the other could not exist. However, these negative states have no intrinsic reality. Darkness is not a permanent condition. Just like the first step in throwing a ball is to move the arm backwards, the darkness is actually a prelude, a gateway, to a far more powerful light. Thats why tears can be so transformational. Paradoxically, it is only in realizing our smallness, weakness and aloneness the limits of our ego-based existence - that we create an opening to expand beyond our perceived limits and become who we were truly born to be. This possibility for transformation is intensely present on Rosh Hashana, when the world begins anew. ON THE THRESHOLD OF A NEW WORLD On this Rosh Hashana, in the year 5766, transformation is not only more possible but more necessary than ever before, not only for Jews but for the entire world. Every year on Rosh Hashana the world waits, suspended in the dark space between the old light and the new. Between two ways of being there is always an empty space, a space of transition. In this space we have the opportunity to let go of the old the pettiness, the resentments, the past mistakes, failures and fears. We can embrace a brand new way of being; a more passionate sense of purpose. We can commit ourselves to a new level of kindness, respect and compassion for the people around us those we already love, and those we could love if we stopped being angry or afraid. In opening ourselves to life, we create the greatest possible opening for G-d to inscribe us in the Book of Life for a year that is good and sweet in the truest sense. But on this Rosh Hashana the world waits at the threshold of Redemption. In these unprecedented times an intense level of darkness hovers over the earth. Our world is shaking. Terror, war, mind-numbing natural disasters and crisis in the Middle East cast a threatening shadow over our lives. These times are frightening and challenging. But this darkness is nothing more or less than the gateway to an entirely new level of light - a new reality. OUR TIMES IN ANCIENT PROPHECY These chaotic times were foreseen in great detail millennia ago by the sages of biblical times. A full discussion of these prophecies is way beyond the scope of this article. But read the words below and see whether or not you think they describe our world today: Insolence and self-centeredness will increase, there will be oppressing inflation, people will be addicted to the good life and the costs will be high, moral standards will dissolve, morality and wisdom will be denigrated, there will be unbridled irresponsibility on the part of authorities, centers of learning will turn into centers of immorality, poverty will increase, the young will denigrate the old, families will disintegrate, leadership will be impudent. The world will see a succession of troubles, epidemics of terrible diseases, and international confrontations. The face of the generation will be like the face of a dog. Just as dogs are not embarrassed by anything they do, so too people will lose their sense of embarrassment. THE GREATER THE DARKNESS, THE GREATER THE LIGHT Against this challenging, chaotic backdrop, we are being called upon to expand beyond our boundaries, to strengthen our relationship with our Creator and to actualize our own potential as partners in Creation. We are living through the time of transition between exile and Redemption. Out of the breakdown of the old and unworkable, we have the opportunity to create something completely new. In fact, it is our destiny. ROSH HASHANA: ITS YOUR CHOICE This Rosh Hashana each one of us has a choice. We can choose to stay unconscious, trapped within the prison of our fears, confusion, resentments and longings, remaining passive victims of circumstance. Or we can use this opportunity to begin to fly. To align ourselves with our destiny. To learn to be free. Freedom is a lofty concept, but its lived in the choices you make each moment. In your relationships. In your spirituality. In your commitment to a life of joy and fulfillment. In your awareness of G-ds nurturing presence in the intimate details of your daily life. In remembering that youre here for a purpose and being willing to do something each day to make that purpose come alive. If you could create a new future, one not based on your fears and past failures, who would you be? How would you behave? What would you dare to create? Who would you thank? Who would you listen to and what would you share? What would you do to enhance your connection to G-d and your own essence? What part of you that youve given up on would you start to nurture? What dreams might you make come true? Rosh Hashana holds within it an awesome power. The light of the past is withdrawn and the light of the future has yet to come down into the world and into your life. The Book is open. What will you choose? Night Boat Fishing Checklist

By Daniel Eggertsen Boat Fishing At Night Checklist Here is an easy checklist of items you will need before you head out for a night fishing trip. ** Two Flashlights with new batteries in each. -Sure enough, one of those flashlights is not going to work when you get out on the water. Of course, this usually happens when you only have one flashlight with you. ** Pair of needle nose pliers -Since it is harder to see your line at night than during the day, you have a greater chance of hooking the fish deeper than usual with the delayed reaction time. The pliers will make your life much easier in these cases. ** Insect repellant -A good mosquito repellant is critical to your sanity on the water. We have used “Skin-so-soft” by Avon and I think it works the best out of any of them. Anything with deet is better than nothing at all. ** Plenty of lures, line, extra rod & reel, etc -This is an obvious one. ** Extra fuse for the boat. -If you blow a fuse out on the water and your boat lights go out, you could be in trouble. ** Blacklight - Using a blacklight with a clear blue fluorescent line will really help you see those hits faster. ** Spare boat battery - Running all of those lights, blacklights, etc can put a strain on your battery. Better safe than sorry. ** First Aid kit - Whether you end up with a snake bite or get hooked by your buddy’s cast, you will need proper medication, Band-Aids and peroxide, etc. ** Cell Phone - Although sometimes you may find it difficult to get a good signal on the water, a cell phone can literally save your life if you get into trouble. There are many other things you should pack for your trip. These are just some of the bigger items we have found useful in the past.
