What is Qigong and its Origins?

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Jaks Lloyd Qigong, pronounced ‘chi kung’ is an ancient Chinese exercise and body healing technique, with overtones of spirituality, that has been developing for more than 3000 years. China is recognized as having the oldest sophisticated and cultured civilization known to man. Many modern treatments for physical and mental ailments have their origins in ancient Chinese healing practices that have been recognized as effective by Western medical practitioners. Most people will be aware of both the Chinese technique of Acupunture and the many comprehensive Chinese herbal remedies and tonics now readily available in the West. The recognition in the West of the practice and art of Qigong is now also growing rapidly as more and more schools and trainers offer their expertise. In the last thirty years Qigong has been known to have been practiced by groups up to thirty thousand strong in Chinese stadiums. The earliest known practitioner of Qigong was Hua Tao (circa 150 A.D.) known as the first famous Chinese surgeon. When Hua Tao advised a General who had consulted him to have an operation the General suspected that Hua Tao was out to murder him and ordered his execution. It is believed that Qigong had its’ beginnings in the ancient practice of sorcery and ritual dances which led eventually to a documented systematic approach that has been continued to be developed to the present day by, amongst others, Taoists, Buddhists Confucians and practitioners of Chinese martial arts. `Qi’, translated from the Mandarin, means Life Force, Breath or Life Energy and ‘Gong’ is Dedicated Practice, Work or Technique and this gives a meaning that the exercise is a combination of breathing techniques combined with bodily movements. Using slow and graceful movements and at the same time practicing controlled and coordinated breathing patterns boosts the flow of ‘Qi’, the vital life force that gives a feeling of inner tranquility and provides the healing and regenerative energies needed by the body. Qigong is an aspect of Chinese medicine that is principally practiced for maintaining good health but it is also taught as a healing technique and is often allied with martial arts training. There are over three thousand different styles and schools of Qigong known throughout the world, some make convincing and more often than not unproven claims to have remarkable healing and curative successes. Others are recognized by Western and Chinese medical practitioners as having benefits to the health of body and mind through controlled exercise leading to stress reduction and physical well being. Since the nineteen fifties’ research into Qigong has been ongoing in both the West and East. Chinese hospitals have recognized Qigong as a standard medical technique since1989 and the Chinese government officially implemented Qigong management regulations when adding the technique to their National Health Plan. Work has been done that suggests that some aspects of Qigong can have very beneficial effects on the joints, balance and prevention of falls amongst the elderly. The curriculae of some medical universities include Qigong courses and offer Batchelor and Master degrees in the subject. As so often in this day of the fast buck there are so called schools, teachers and practitioners of Qigong that make unfounded claims of their expertise and the benefits of joining their set up, for a fee of course, so be wary, ask questions and check out the answers before parting with any cash. Caveat emptor and carry out due diligence! However there are very many highly skilled, qualified and totally committed believers actively engaged in the business of helping others to achieve the benefits of the ancient and proven Qigong route to bringing harmony to body and mind. Create Pretty Recycled Notepads From Junk!

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Lindsay Small This is how to turn brown paper, paper bags and any other paper scraps into cute and useful notepads and scribble pads. It is simple to do, so even little children can help! They make great little presents and if you start to save your paper now, you will have a good collection in no time. Set aside a box for collecting half-printed pages from the desk, paper shopping bags, scraps of pretty wrapping paper or wallpaper samples, and put them to good use! You will need: A pile of scrap paper Scissors Scrap cardboard PVA glue (white glue or school glue) Decide on the size of your notebook and cut a piece of cardboard as the backing. Use this to cut out a number of pages for your notebook. You can mix and match papers and textures or stick to one kind. Stack them up with the cardboard underneath, bang them gently onto a hard surface so that they lie true, and then put them flat on a table or counter with the top edge protruding slightly over the edge. Weight the stack down with a heavy book but leave the top edge uncovered. Paint along the top of the stack with the PVA glue, making sure that all the pages come into contact with some glue (a finger comes in handy for this!). Leave to dry. The notepads are now ready to use, but you may prefer to embellish them a little - especially if you intend to give them as gifts. Try painting on an extra thin layer of glue and dipping into glitter. Use a small piece of ribbon or braid along the top edge, stick on buttons and bows, or just use an attractive piece of gift wrap as the top page and finish by adding a further, folded strip of the same paper to neaten. The possibilities are endless and you will have fun experimenting. Lindsay Small is the owner of Activity Village, packed full of fun and educational activities for kids. It’s All In Your Mind - Love Must Still The Mind

By Christopher Walker MEME Summary of the Keynote presented to Gosford. What is a MEME? A meme is to the consciousness what a gene is to the physical body Genes are of the physical worldMemes are of the world of thought Memes are thoughts we think without thinking. A meme therefore lives in our subconscious and can define our behavior, reactions, actions, motives, tastes, preferences, inclinations, interests, decisions. But rarely to we identify them. Memes come from societal norms. Memes come from parents. For example incest happens in the children of incested women at nearly 4 times the prevalence than in those children of non incested mothers. This is not a gene it is a meme. WE have social norms. And these are memes because we hardly know that they can be questioned. In some religious societies people are punished severely for breaking or even questioning memes. As a change agent in human love, I must question those memes and therefore I get allot of resistance from people. Memes are often unquestioned. To do what you love in your life you must break memes. This is the key to it. Memes can sit in your subconscious and prevent you living the authentic life you know is possible. Here are some memes, that can prevent you from living your dreams. The meme that something always looks after us (universe or god or someone) The meme that our expectations are real and the world has a problem The meme that we are separate from nature The meme that support means love and challenge is not worthy of love The meme that you are, in some way, better off copying someone else. The meme that someone is happier than you The meme that there is a place where there is less challenge The meme that growth means more success and mental peace. Here are some new memes you might like to replace the above with; Nothing is wrong. There is only beauty in the world that I still havent been able to see. Love is support and challenge. There will never be an imbalance. Challenge is as much fun as support/ I cannot be right. Even my intuition is half wrong. My thoughts are half right. I can only do what I love. There is nothing to fix. It isnt broken. Everything is worthy of love. No matter. Anything we try to fix just proves our own judgments and causes more memes. There are no excuses There is no one to blame nobody does more to us than we do to ourselves. Appreciation builds deprecation destroys. People become as I treat them. Everything I want to change in somebody is something that I dont appreciate and therefore wanting to change people, depreciates them. We are everything we see. Just in different forms. The power is that what we judge we breed, what we judge we attract. What we appreciate is us. What we criticize is us. WE are the all. And this is how we expand, by seeing both sides. There is nothing to change. Depression is caused by elation (fantasy) Live with spirit Chris Walker Chris Walker is a world leading change agent, an environmentalist and author of more than 20 books. If We’re Cutting Out All Fat, Why Are Americans Getting Fatter?

Friday, August 24th, 2007

By Kim Beardsmore Since the fat-free craze began, statistics show people in developed countries such as the USA, UK and Australia, have grown fatter and fatter! Just because a food is fat-free doesnt mean its energy free or calorie free. If you are trying to cut out all forms of fat from your diet, you may be risking your health. Although weve been taught to think of fat as the culprit in the battle of the bulge, clearly this is only part of the whole diet picture. Many fat-free foods are actually very high in sugar and carbohydrate calories. These calories, when eaten in excess (or more than your body requires) are simply converted intoyou guessed it, fat! Ironically, in order to burn fat and lose weight you need a certain amount of good quality fat. Thats why a sensible eating plan designed to help you lose weight will contain fish and olive oil. Bad fats include trans-fatty acids or hydrogenated fat. Good fats are mono-saturated and polyunsaturated fats containing omega-3 and omega-3 fatty acids which help to lower cholesterol, improve eyesight and boost brain power. Fad diets usually overemphasize one particular food or food type or eliminate complete food groups. They violate the first principle of good nutrition, which is to eat a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods. There are no superfoods that cause you to lose weight. No one type of food has all the nutrients you need for good health. Fad diets also violate a second important principle of good nutrition eating should be enjoyable. Where a diet is monotonous and boring, its almost impossible to stay on them for long enough to lose the weight and stabilize at a healthy weight. Losing weight is all about excellence in nutrition. When you have a balanced approach and eat wisely from all food groups you will lose the weight and enjoy the journey! Kim Beardsmore M.B.A. (H.R.M.), B.Sc. Family Stories — How to Gather and Save Them for Posterity

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Chris King Every family has years and years of stories — happy, sad, exciting, humorous, adventurous, historic, good, bad, and ugly. These stories are often shared when the family has holiday or annual get-togethers. But, without being recorded on tape and/or paper, they are soon forgotten and never enjoyed by the following generations. Dont let that happen to your precious tales. Begin by writing your family stories down as you remember them. And, dont be dismayed if others have a different perception of what actually happened or the worth of this work. The important point to remember is that writing down your family stories in your own manner is a great way to start and will also prove to be a wonderful experience for you. Start with the elders in the family. Before your parents, grandparents, and/or aunts and uncles are no longer here, sit down with them and ask lots of leading questions. If you say, Tell me your story, they will answer, Nothing exciting ever happened to me. Theres nothing to tell. If you ask thoughtful, open-ended questions about places theyve lived, people theyve known, teachers theyve had, places theyve traveled to, their remembrances of first dates, embarrassing moments, and happenings and important events that made a difference in their lives, they will fill up tapes and books with interesting stories. Where can I find good questions to ask? Donald Davis, master storyteller of personal stories, has written an excellent book filled with thought and story provoking questions called Telling Your Own Stories: for Family and Classroom Storytelling, Public Speaking, and Personal Journaling. Once you have the information, its time to create the story for posterity. This is the most fun, but also the most demanding part of the storytelling and story capturing process. You will have many extra details and facts that will detract, rather than enhance, the final story. Keeping in mind the attributes of a successful story — time, place, character(s), conflict, crisis, change, and resolution — you will pull everything together for a story that will interest, entertain and last. It is OK to embellish and add the emotions you felt when listening to the story for the first time. Once you have it in a tellable and/or readable form, start sharing it with others in the family at get-togethers and reunions. You will soon discover the parts that work and dont work. Make note of reactions and points of laughter and tears. Ask for feedback (dont listen to negative remarks). Create a written version. I know that this whole process sounds time consuming and like a lot of work. It is both, but once you have these treasures written in final form, you and the whole family will be delighted. You cant give a better gift to family members — beginning with the whole process of gathering and listening to the final product of sharing. Remember, everyone in the family who takes part will be excited and proud, and, hopefully, will continue the process of capturing family stories for posterity. Recruiting on the Web Requires Special Record Keeping for Legal Purposes

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Lesli Peterson by Lesli Peterson, Business Analyst, VCG with Phil McCutchen, Marketing Manager, VCG With the age of the Internet upon us, recruiting methods have expanded dramatically. Staffing companies now regularly use the Web to locate qualified candidates for their open positions. The most common methods include searching Job Boards and Corporate Websites. Job Boards, whether belonging to the staffing company or otherwise, allow recruiters to post specific positions, asking applicants to submit their resumes or follow a link to a registration page on their website. Corporate Websites are now allowing recruiters to post jobs for general or specific positions and permitting candidates to register with the Staffing Company and/or apply for a specific position. Unfortunately, many Staffing Firms are in the dark about how to address certain recordkeeping requirements. Providing much needed light is the 1978 Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures (UGESP) published by the government to resolve inconsistencies between the EEOC(1), DOL(2), DOJ(3) and OPM(4). The UGESP, which requires that certain records be kept for reasons of measuring disparate impact, have published clarifications on the issue with regard to new technology. The following questions have been published as a three-part test to determine if your business should report race, gender and ethnicity information about an individual: Is your business acting to fill a particular position? Is the individual following your standard procedures for submitting an application? Is the individual indicating interest in a specific position? If the answer is yes to all of these questions, information about race, gender, and ethnicity must be obtained and recorded by your business. Lets review some examples as it relates to the new technology being used by recruiting and staffing companies today. A person registers with your business on the Internet and sends you an email indicating they are looking for a receptionist position. Even if you have receptionist positions open, this person has not indicated interest in a particular position and therefore, gathering information is not necessary. As a recruiter, you search a Job Board for a .NET developer because you have a specific job you need to fill immediately. Even though you have a specific position in mind, you do not need to collect information on those resumes you reviewed for this position. Resumes posted to Job Boards are not considered applicants of your position. You find a resume on a Job Board and it looks great. You call this person and speak with them about the position. They are very interested and indicate they want to send you an updated resume. This person now knows about and is interested in the position. Additionally, they are following your standard submission steps by sending you an updated resume. You are required to record their information. However, if you call them and they indicate they are not interested or they do not return your call, it is not necessary to record their information. You have a job posted on your corporate website. One of your registered candidates applies for the position using your website. This person has gone through all the proper channels to inform you of their interest in a specific position. You are required to gather their information. The difficult part of this process for staffing and recruiting firms is not so much about knowing when as it is about knowing how to capture the information in a timely and efficient manner. With sophisticated staffing software such as VCGs StaffSuite WorldLink or WebPAS WorldLink, recruiters and staffing firms can electronically capture race, gender and ethnicity information at all the right times in the process, thus helping them stay legal. - end - Equal Employment Opportunity Commission U.S. Department of Labor U.S. Department of Justice Office of Personnel Management (formerly the Civil Service Commission) Lesli Peterson is a Business Analyst with VCG, Inc., the leading provider of staffing software to the staffing industry. Career Success Through Engagement at Work

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Melanie Keveles Several years ago, a friend shared the story of a sojourner who came upon three individuals working with stone. Curious about what the workers were doing, the traveler approached the first worker and asked, What are you doing with these stones? Without hesitation the worker quickly responded, I am a stone cutter and I am cutting stones. Not satisfied with this answer, the traveler approached the second worker and asked the same question. The second worker paused for a moment and explained, I am a stone cutter and I am trying to make enough money to support my family. The sojourner then asked the third worker, What are you doing with these stones? The third worker stopped what he was doing, bringing his chisel to his side. Deep in thought, the worker slowly gazed toward the traveler and shared, I am a stone cutter and I am building a cathedral! This story has been told in many variations, yet it highlights the situation employers face each day in every organization: How are you going to engage your employees in their work so that they are intrinsically motivated? Worker engagement basics Seven years ago, The Gallup Organization created an opinion-based tool that identifies and measures elements of worker engagement most powerfully linked to improved business outcomes sales growth, productivity, customer loyalty, and more. To identify the elements of worker engagement, Gallup conducted hundreds of focus groups and thousands of worker interviews in all kinds of organizations, at all levels, in most industries and in many countries. From these inquiries, researchers pinpointed 12 key employee expectations that, when satisfied, form the foundation of strong feelings of engagement. The result was a 12-question survey in which employees rate their response on a scale of one to five. These are Gallups 12 questions, known as Q12: Do you know what is expected of you? Do you have the materials and equipment you need to do your work correctly? Do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day? In the last week, have you received recognition or praise for doing good work? Does your supervisor, or someone at work, seem to care about you as a person? Is there someone at work who encourages your development? Do your opinions seem to count? Does the mission/purpose of your company make you feel your job is important? Are your fellow employees committed to quality work? Do you have a best friend there? In the last six months, has someone at work talked to you about your progress? In the last year, have you had opportunities at work to learn and grow? While these questions may seem rather basic, Q12 has created quite a stir in the human resources community. Consider an environment in which an employee and his or her manager have discussed these questions. Just airing them provides an atmosphere of trust, open conversation and a forum for addressing issues directly that often impede productive work. Hiring for content and context There are two important factors in any job: the content of the work (what the employee does specifically) and the context in which this work is accomplished. Many employers hire for content, with much of the interview focused on whether or not the potential employee is capable of doing the activities that make up the majority of the job. Yet many potential employees come to the employment interview wondering whether this organization will provide a positive environment in which they can do their work. As organizations face their very survival today, whether an employee is engaged often gets put to the sidelines. However, nothing can be more important to the organization and the individuals within it. Companies using Gallups Q12 have seen a direct correlation between worker satisfaction and their bottom line.Engagement process requires employee, employer involvement It doesnt matter whether your organization has a formal program designed by Gallup. No matter who you are or where you are in the organization, you can begin to focus on the important issue of providing a meaningful work environment. Employee engagement requires both employer and employee involvement. As a manager, you can explore the questions underpinning Gallups Q12 with your team. A good way to set the stage for this discussion would be for all to read the book First Break All the Rules: What the Worlds Greatest Managers Do Differently, by Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman. The authors are members of The Gallup Organization and have closely aligned their methods to Gallup research. If you would like to engage your manager in a discussion of improving the context in which you operate, raise the Q12 questions at an appropriate meeting time. You might even clip this article and put it on his or her desk with a note suggesting that you want to talk about these issues. It is time to confront bringing the greatest satisfaction and meaning to your work. Like that stone worker who sees his work as part of a much larger purpose, you can feel the satisfaction of leaving your mark every day in your job. Finding Biological Parents - Your One Stop Information Source

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Linda E. Joy To find ones biological parents and siblings can be quite challenging, however by using the various resources and registries offered on the internet, success can be achieved by reaching the masses of people that are searching as well. More than often adopted children look for their biological parents as they grow older and become more interested of their heritage, and in turn may find that their parents are looking for them as well. At times the adoption may have been closed; hence this information was not made available through the adoption agency, since it is an open adoption. In due course, circumstances change and some people find that there is something missing in their lives, and finding biological parents, siblings, and other relatives can answer many questions that have been in the back of their minds. Besides just wanting to know, finding biological parents may provide another purpose as well. There are a number of adults that were adopted as children who want to know their genetic and medical history, which is a great motivator for finding biological parents, especially in cases of disorders or diseases existing in the family that have a genetic link, it would be useful to know as much as possible. An extreme situation could be in the case of finding a genetic match for a bone marrow transplant or other type of tissue or organ transplant. Breast cancer is another example. In case if a womans mother or sister has been diagnosed with breast cancer, she has greater than a 50% chance of getting it as well. This scenario is quite regular, and many women are faced with deciding whether or not to take preventative measures, such as elective mastectomy. There are many reasons behind finding biological parents, siblings, and other family members, but success in these efforts ultimately fills an emotional void that can be made whole no other way. For those who are looking to initiate the search, a good place to start finding biological parents and others is by registering on a number of sites dedicated to getting families back together. You simply have to post as much information as you can, search public records, and make use of people-finding services as well. Despite the fact that finding biological parents may take some time, be assured that its not impossible. One would need to use a methodical approach and all available resources; talk to people and gather as much information as possible. Sooner or later the pieces of the puzzle will start coming together and hopefully a family reunion after finding biological parents and who knows who else! All the best! Linda E. Bad Credit Home Loans, Personal Loans

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Blake_Hendrickson]Blake Hendrickson Need bad credit home loans or bad credit personal loans? Think twice about using your home as collateral. If you need money to pay bills or make home improvements and think the answer is in refinancing, a second mortgage, or a home equity loan - consider your options carefully. If you can’t make the required payments you could lose your home as well as the equity you’ve built up. It’s important not to let anyone talk you into using your home to borrow money you may not be able to afford to pay back. Not all bad credit home loans or bad credit personal loans are created equal. Some unscrupulous lenders target older or low-income homeowners and those with bad credit problems. These lenders may offer bad credit home loans and bad credit personal loans based on the equity in your home not on your ability to repay the loan. High interest rates and credit costs can make it very expensive to borrow money even if you use your home as collateral. Talk to an attorney, financial advisor, or someone else you trust before you make any decisions about borrowing money. Non-profit bad credit and housing counseling services also can be useful in helping you manage your credit and make smart decisions about bad credit home loans and bad credit personal loans. Early warning signs avoid any lender who: Tells you to falsify information on the home loan or personal loan application. For example, stay away from a lender who tells you to say that your income is higher than it is. Pressures you into applying for a loan or applying for more money than you need Pressures you into accepting monthly payments you can’t make or could have trouble making. Fails to provide required home loan and personal loan disclosures or tells you not to read them. Misrepresents the kind of credit you’re getting, like calling a one-time loan a line of credit.
