Nokia 7370 - Set the Style Statement

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Adam_Jaylin]Adam Jaylin There is a trend of fashion phones that has swept the UK market lately, and why not? There is no dearth of fashion maniacs who are ready to forsake anything and everything for their style. Such status symbols in the form of mobile phones are innumerable and are manufactured by every brand. One such mobile phone that is swaying the target market is called Nokia 7370. To be given a status of fashion phone indicates that it is made delicately and a lot of care is being taken in designing its exteriors. True indeed in the case of Nokia 7370, the model comes as a part of the eminent L’Amour collection that is responsible for bestowing it with beautiful looks. Also, it works well with its features that gives it an edge over other stunning phones. This is a slider phone with a 240×320 pixel display in 262,000 colours that gives it an excellent display. When we talk about its features, you would find nearly all those features that are expected out of a mid-ranged phone. To clarify further, Nokia 7370 comes with an integrated 1.3 Mega Pixel camera that give reasonably good resolution with its 8x zoom. You can also capture videos through this designer phone. Coming on to its connectivity, this sleek designer phone works on a tri-band GSM with the support of technologies as GPRS and EDGE. Strangely enough, this phone is a non smart phone and still has all these capabilities. Web browsing wouldn’t have been easier with [http://www.ukonlinemarket.co.uk/mobile/Phone_Deal.asp?Ph=Nokia--7370]Nokia 7370 that supports email capabilities as well. Also you can view attachments with .pop3, .jpeg, .3gp,.mp3, .ppt, .doc,.xls and .pdf files. Features as Bluetooth are also readily installed in it. And when work ends and entertainment begins, you have that in the form of an integrated MP3 player, visual stereo radio and radio FM. Plus games and JAVA comes as a part of the whole package. However, memory is one area which disappoints the user with only 10 MB of it which seems utterly insufficient. There is no 3G feature that is surely another cause of concern. Nokia 7370 is one device that gives you an edge over others with a style statement which is ready to make others envious. Are you thinking of playing the role of a show stealer? Anniversary Gift Ideas

Friday, September 14th, 2007

By Ross Bainbridge Did you know that it was Emily Post who, in 1922, wrote her first etiquette book that gave suggestions as to what anniversary gifts should be given for the first, fifth, tenth, fifteenth, twentieth, twenty-fifth and fiftieth wedding anniversaries? She recognized the importance of given traditional gifts and wanted to set a standard for her family and friends and the public in general. Years later, she included more years to her list and recommended that gifts should be given the first fifteen years of marriage and every five years after that. During the early years of marriage, gifts are simple and can be quite inexpensive. For instance, the first year is paper, and a gift can be as simple as a greeting card. Other token gifts include cotton for year two, wood for year five, iron for six and tin for ten years of marital bliss. A great gift idea for any anniversary is a personalized poetry gift framed in silver for a couples 25th or gold for a couples 50th. Anniversary poems can be personalized for any wedding year and can be framed in a variety of ways. Of course, there are many other anniversary gift ideas that can be given including flowers, candy, jewelry, gift certificates, etc. There are no end to the websites that have literally thousands of suggestion as to what might make a special gift for a couple you know who are celebrating any number of years together. You can also go to almost any mall or specialty shop and find a number of gifts and cards that are appropriate for anniversary gifts you can give to a couple, whether it be family or friends, who are celebrating an anniversary. Anniversary Gifts provides detailed information on Anniversary Gifts, Wedding Anniversary Gifts, First Wedding Anniversary Gifts, 25Th Wedding Anniversary Gifts and more. Emotionally Healthy Relationships

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

By Yvonne Perry There is nothing more frustrating than a relationship that is always in turmoil and in need of a referee. Friends and family can be supportive but they tend to take sides or else they dont have the qualifications to help as a counselor. If one partner is constantly using the other partner to fix things that are out of balance in the relationship, it wont be long before the damage done by blaming, nagging and childish behavior will ruin the marriage. Many times our issues are about how we view ourselves, our partners and romance. Learn about your own identity by taking the quiz at www.celarien.com/reconnect.htm. Once a person has a good sense of self and is able to meet most of their own needs, they are ready to make a positive contribution to a relationship rather than being a drain hole through which all the energy seeps out. However, getting to that point is sometimes difficult or slow, and even when you think youve resolved your issues, you may find emotional healing an ongoing process. Those who are emotionally and mentally healthy still need refresher courses at times. When I am discontent about something in my relationship, many times it is my own stuff at the core of the problem. Since the problem doesnt have anything to do with my mate, I talk to a life coach who can help me see what I need to do to change and bring more joy into my own life and thus my marriage. Then, once Ive moved through that phase and resolved that issue, I share my experience with my spouse. Life coaches are great resources for letting off steam that could harm a relationship. If your life is a mess, try talking to a trusted life coach instead of blaming your partner for something that has nothing to do with him/her or your marriage. You may find your mate supportive and proud of you for resolving the matter in a mature way that helps both keep the romance alive. Sometimes, you simply need to hear what the other person has to say without jumping to conclusions before you hear the entire matter. Maybe a change of scenery is needed–a place to get a way from distractions and talk deeply with your partner to reconnect and keep your relationship alive. Don’t do like I did an ignore problems hoping they will go away. Get the help you need and make the most out of your relationship. Yvonne Perry is a freelance writer and the owner of Write On! Dating Tip for Women: Don’t Work Too Hard

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

By Terry Hernon MacDonald Remember Jerry Hall, the model who married Mick Jagger? Jerry was famous for making this statement: “My mother said it was simple to keep a man. You must be a maid in the living room, a cook in the kitchen, and a whore in the bedroom.” I don’t know about you, but if keeping a man meant all that work, I’d have stayed single. In addition to that pearl of wisdom, Ms. Hall offered this one: “Even if you have only two seconds, drop everything and give him (oral sex). That way he won’t really want sex with anyone else.” Poor Jerry. Too bad her mother didn’t tell her that if a man tends to want sex with “anyone else,” he’s not great husband material. Sadly, despite all her hard work, Mick Jagger continued to have sex with other people and fathered a child with another model during his marriage to Hall. They are now divorced. So much for keeping a man! The point? No guy is worth running yourself ragged for. Instead of appreciating your efforts, he will likely take you for granted and come to resent you. Think about it: Do you fall for guys who are at your beck and call all the time? They’re great for helping you move, but you probably wouldn’t marry one. All right. Let’s say you decide to move in with a guy. Before you run out to Bed Bath & Beyond, it’s absolutely imperative that you talk to your boyfriend about sharing household chores. It’s not romantic, but you’ll save yourself much misery in the end. And whatever you do, don’t get off on the wrong foot by cooking dinner every night and doing his laundry. Resist any and all impulses to “wife and mother” the guy. Otherwise, he’ll take you for granted, or even worse, marry you and expect you to be his servant for the rest of your life. And that’s definitely not romantic! Allow a man to cook for you for a change. Let him do your laundry every now and then. There’s no reason to expect him to be your maid in the living room, cook in the kitchen, or whore in the bedroom, but every once in a while it wouldn’t hurt. Remember: You have a lot to offer (if you don’t believe me, take out a pen and paper and write down a list of the qualities that make you special; emphasize things like your sense of humor, leave off your ability to fold a fitted sheet). Don’t let a guy do you any favors. Keep this in mind: You’re a great girl, and he’d be lucky to have you. How Distressing is Social Phobia?

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michael_Rayel] Michael Rayel I remember a friend in college who would blush, sweat, and tremble when required by a teacher to speak in class. A few weeks before the presentation, hed be anxious, agitated, and couldnt sleep. Because I was still a student then, I didnt have any clue what he was going through. But I knew that something was terribly wrong. A few years ago while in the airport, I noticed a man whod wait for everyone to leave the washroom before hed use the urinal. He wasnt comfortable that someone would see him urinate. In retrospect, I can say (now that Im a psychiatrist) that those two individuals might have suffered from Social Phobia or Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). I just hope that they are doing well now but the symptoms that they manifested at the time were consistent with this devastating illness. How bad is Social Phobia or SAD? Social Phobia or SAD is a type of anxiety disorder characterized by extreme fear, anxiety, or distress when exposed to a social gathering or when doing something before a group of people. Public speaking is the most common situation that exposes the individuals social fears. An individual suffering from this disorder develops significant anxiety symptoms such as sweating, fast heart beat, tremulousness, and restlessness when making a presentation or giving a minor talk. Even small corporate or committee meetings can cause grave distress. Urinating in public washrooms, eating in fast food restaurants, writing in front of people or signing documents in a bank can also trigger feelings of fear and discomfort. Individuals with this illness are preoccupied with being embarrassed or criticized by others. Some patients feel that people are so focused on them and are only waiting for blunders to happen. So Social Phobia can be devastating to a lot of patients and their families. Because of their difficulties in a social milieu, some of them have eventually lost their jobs, friends, and spouses. It is an illness that has wrought havoc to many. It is therefore vital that Social Phobia should be recognized and treated without delay. Is there any treatment for this illness? Fortunately, some newer antidepressants such as paroxetine and venlafaxine are known to work and have caused significant relief to a lot of individuals. However, these medications dont work right away. They need to be taken daily for a few weeks to see any benefit. Moreover, the medications maximum effect may occur within 6-8 weeks or longer. To maintain stability after feeling normal, patients may have to take the medication for several months to a few years. In addition to medications, cognitive-behavioral intervention also works well. By restructuring the persons cognition, patients eventually learn to face social situations without fear and uncertainty. Dr. Michael G. You Can’t Sell Antique Appliances on The Internet, Can You?

Monday, September 10th, 2007

By Wayne Messick When John Jowers went to work at his father’s appliance company, he never thought it would lead to a sideline business restoring antique refrigerators. But now their “cool” appliances are doing a hot business on the web. Those of us who are, to put it politely, in our prime, may remember a time when a refrigerator wasn’t just a big, rectangular box in the kitchen. It was a sleek, aerodynamic piece of industrial art. A Philco or Frigidaire looked like it had been designed with the same artistic flair as a 57 Chevy. Maybe we even remember the old GE generator top fridge at grandma’s house. Those were the days! In Clayton, Georgia, a town in the Appalachian foothills an hour and a half outside of Atlanta, John Jowers is doing a brisk business keeping a piece of Americana alive. John and his team have expanded his father’s appliance business, originally founded in 1958, to include the full restoration of vintage refrigerators and stoves for a growing number of customers who crave the style and nostalgia of a bygone era. Clayton is a resort area, and the population base shifts drastically from winter to summer. And while he had never given any thought to restoring vintage appliances, John knew that he had to find a way to build his sales and keep his team occupied during the off-season. “In the winter months, you have to keep your workers on board and busy. A couple of the guys came to me and said `hey, there’s an old refrigerator in the back of the warehouse. Do you mind if we paint it red? and I said, if it keeps you busy, go ahead!” “We put it in our front window as part of a Christmas display, and suddenly someone wanted to buy it! Once it was gone, the phone began to ring off the hook - everyone wanted to know where the little red refrigerator had gone! So, we began doing one-off pieces for people locally. We dabbled in it for a couple of years, and someone convinced me that there really was a market for what we were doing, so I decided to build a web site.” “I depend on the Internet. Without it I wouldn’t have the antique business.” “If I were trying to market these items in a 100-mile radius, there simply aren’t enough potential clients that want these products or have the money to spend to make it a viable business. 98% of the business I do with the vintage appliances comes from the Internet.” His refurnished stoves and refrigerators have found homes all across the country and beyond. “Very few of our clients are in our general area. We keep a map up in the office and we peg every city that we go to or ship to, and when you look at the map, the bulk of the clients have been in the New England states. Although we’ve shipped something to almost every state in the Union at this point, the Midwest and the Northeast have been our biggest demand areas.” He believes that much of his success, both online and off, stems from the fact that he is offering a truly unique service. Antique Appliances is the only company in the US that specializes in the restoration of vintage refrigerators, and one of only a small number who restores vintage electric stoves. Many companies are restoring gas stoves in the US because a gas stove is rather simple to repair and restore-no wiring, no moving parts, no chemicals involved. Electric stoves, however, are more complicated- a thorough knowledge of electrical systems is needed. Refurbishing a refrigerator requires even more expertise: in addition to the electrical aspect, special certification is needed to handle the refrigerants and to clean the systems. Most appliance restorers don’t have the required know-how or certification. But because Jowers TV & Appliances was already in the business of selling new appliances, John had a pre-assembled team of qualified servicemen and technicians. John has no plans to take his new appliance sales online. While Internet sales for niche items like vintage appliances are skyrocketing, the competition to move new inventory is stiff. He knows he would likely only lose money trying to compete for online sales with a large outlet like Sears.com or JCPenney.com. He does, however, believe that his new appliance sales have been helped as more and more manufacturers have added search engines that allow customers to find authorized dealers in their geographic area. He has seen a few sales locally that have come to him via appliance manufacturer’s web sites, and feels that this allows smaller dealers to profit without investing in building a site. John acknowledges that, when he left for college, the last thing he thought he’d do was to come back to a small town and work in the family business. But his work experience while in college made him realize that he really enjoyed taking full responsibility for customer satisfaction, something that is vital to a family business, but often of secondary importance to larger stores. “As a teenager, when I went out on deliveries with the other guys and there was a problem, believe me, the customer would address ME with their concerns because they knew I was my father’s son!” “In college, I went to work part time in a local home improvement center. During my first week there, I saw my boss, the store’s assistant manager, make a woman mad over a can of red paint. I went into his office and I said, `you may fire me for saying this, but you’ve done the worst thing you could have done. If you had given her another can of paint, she would have walked out of the store satisfied, and never said a word about it. But mark my words, you’ve made her mad, you didn’t give her another can of paint, and now shes going to walk out of here and tell everyone in her bridge club and her church group, and you’ve probably lost 12 customers over a can of paint.” “I went home that night and asked myself what I wanted to do with my life, if I could really be happy somewhere climbing the corporate ladder but having no say-so about customer satisfaction, where you’ll always have to hand it off to another person. Suddenly, the family business seemed like the right choice.” We have published over fifty profiles of established traditional family owned companies who are leveraging their companies online. And we will be interviewing fifty more as we complete two new books in progress. Painless Methods for Getting a Constant Stream of Referrals

Sunday, September 9th, 2007

By Leslie Sprankling When I was selling Encyclopedia Britannica door-to-door many years ago, it was an obligatory part of the job to ask for referrals. And I hated it. It made me nervous and shaky just to think of it. Is this how you feel too? I hated to ask for fear I was imposing on my prospects, or even destroying my chances of a sale, so I left it almost until I was out the door, like an afterthought. As I didnt make many sales, I didnt seem to get many referrals either, which made matters worse. And because I didnt get many sales I feared that I may lose what sales I did get if I asked for referrals. And yet referrals can be the very best prospective customers you can get, and the very cheapest way of getting them. Every business, every salesperson, needs a constant source of qualified referrals. Do you hate asking for referrals? Does it make you uncomfortable just thinking about asking for referrals? Would you rather pay a visit to the dentist for a tooth treatment than ask for a referral? Then listen up because you are now going to learn how asking for referrals can be completely painless. In fact we are going to start with six proven methods for getting referrals, without even asking for them.Over my years in marketing I have discovered, even invented, a lot of ways to get a constant stream of qualified referrals without having to go through the painful process of asking directly for referrals. OK! you ask, how can you get referrals if you dont ask for them? Its simple! Just use, or develop, a referral system (or systems) that do it for you. Here are some innovative systems for getting referrals without asking. Complementary Businesses Referral SystemFor almost every business, including yours, there are a number of professionals, people or businesses which sell or provide products or service that complement, but do not compete with yours. For example, if you own a ladies dress boutique, your list will likely comprise shoe stores, beauty salons, weight loss centers, fitness clubs, perhaps even jewelry stores. Using the phone book or Yellow Pages, make a list of these people and businesses Now create a referral program that pays referral fees for people that are sent to you by your referral partners. As an alternative, offer to joint venture by referring one of your customers to them for each one of theirs they refer to you. You can make this system more effective, you can personalize or customize the coupons, tickets, or cards that the referred customers brings with them to your business. This makes it look more professional and also simplifies the process of tracking and paying each referral source. Favorite Charities Referral System Do you have favorite charity that you donate to? Are there active charities, especially childrens or animal charities in your neighbourhood? I suggest these two because child and animal protection organizations are usually popular in most communities, yet they are always seeking extra funds. Contact the Chief Executives of these organizations (and any others of your choice) in your neighbourhood and make this proposal. If they will provide their full list of donors and/or members with a recommendation or referral to your business you will pay a fixed percentage to their organization for every sale that results. Make the percentage meaningful (perhaps 10% or 15%) and be scrupulous about paying it. Offer to supply them with printed cards naming their organization with the message that each time their patrons shop with you and present this card, they will be effectively donating that percentage of their purchase to the organization You can expand this many fold if you then ask each customer referred to you if they would like to be responsible for additional donations to their favourite charity. As they are likely to be very receptive to this, it makes it easy to ask them to pass on referral cards to their friends. Just ask them how many cards they would like. This can turn into a real viral system of referrals, producing oodles of new customers at the minimal cost of the donation to the charity. It may also get you free media publicity which will further enhance your business. This system can be extended to schools and other non-profit organizations in the community such as Boy Scouts, Community Chests and clubs. The Donation Referral System This referral system is very simple. Give your products or services away (or significant discounts on your products or services) in local promotions or raffles. The money for tickets sold in the promotion or raffle go to the promoter (a local charity or non-profit group) but you get the value of having your product and name widely promoted during the event. If your donation is big enough, you can even ask for a list of the ticket purchasers names and addresses so that you can follow up with a consolation offer to all those who did not win the major prize. Alternatively you can do a deal with the promoters whereby, with every ticket purchased, they hand out a discount coupon or card from your business, to make everyone a winner. When we operated a bowling alley, we always canvassed to local traders for door prizes and tournament prizes for our 24 hour marathons. This guaranteed at least one prize for every entrant in our marathons and also encouraged a good turnout of spectators as our door prizes were drawn at odd times (at least once per hour) during the marathon. Each spectator was required to register with name, address and telephone number to get a ticket and was required to be in-house should his ticket be drawn. The Hairdressers Referral System Like almost everyone, I go to a hairdresser frequently and so do my family members. I have never yet met a hairdresser or barber that couldnt talk the hind leg off a donkey, their chatter is incessant. They get very friendly with their customers, and most customers like this, some becoming like confidantes. This referral system simply exploits utilizes this feature of getting your hair cut or styled. Just approach the local barbers and hairstylists and offer them $1 or $2 for every referral card they pass out to their customers which is presented to your business. Your card can offer a reasonable discount and have a place on the back for the referring persons name and the name of the one referred. You could even motivate them to talk about your business by promising them a percentage of each sale that results from their referral. If a barber gets 100 customers a week and hands a card to each one, and half of them come to you, you have gained 50 new customers in a week, and the barber has earned an easy $50-$100 or more if you pay him a percentage. 2005, Leslie H Sprankling. Marketing Yourself and Your Business to Thriving!

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

By Janice Copeland We all watch the commercials on TV. We hear them on the radio. We meet someone at an event or hear them speak and we are hooked. What has happened? Their marketing efforts have made the ordinary sound extraordinary. They have been successful at essentially creating something out of nothing! This is marketing at its best! How can we, as entrepreneurial women, market ourselves and our businesses most effectively? First we need to clarify what we want to gain as a result of our marketing efforts. Once we have identified those goals, then we can go back and put our plan together which will tell us HOW to market ourselves most effectively. What we want to gain as a result of our marketing might be: -To increase the number of potential clients who know about us. -To increase the number of potential clients who not only have heard of us, but who understand why they need our products. (explain the ways that your products or services will benefit them) -To increase the number of potential clients to take action and contact us to buy our products or services. Some entrepreneurs still think it works exactly like that. However, they are mistaken. Yes, we want our prospects to hear about us, know that we have the perfect product or solution for them which will entice them to come to us to buy. But it doesnt necessarily happen so easily today. The business landscape has changed due to two very specific changes in our current marketplace. 1- The number of competitor entrepreneurs is constantly rising (consumers have more choices in just about every industry) and 2- The abundance of information (due to the internet and similar venues) bombarding people with everything theyve always (or even never) wanted to know about tends to be overwhelming and confusing. Because of these changes, successful businesspeople have to be aware of the newest ways to thrive, not just survive in todays marketplace. To thrive in todays marketplace, no matter your industry, you must make every effort to position yourself and your company to be top of mind with as many potential AND current clients as possible. The onus is on you to ensure that when your potential or current client is ready to buy your product or service they think of YOU first. Do you see how that is a different mindset from the old days where the focus was on putting a good product or service out there, knowing that you would essentially have clients come to you for them? Today it just doesnt work that way. Put simply, our potential clients are being bombarded with LOTS of information and offers. In order to secure them as clients, they need YOU to come out as the preferred vendor or the person they will choose to hire or buy from. This happens only after you have “proven” yourself in it for the long haul. With so many choices, the average person needs time to sort through the information and decide who is for real and who has the best product or service. It is up to you to market and position yourself as the most credible, trustworthy expert in your industry. The responsibility for keeping your name in front of them until the time they are ready to move forward, remains totally with you as business owner. The latest research shows that the average person will not act on something until they see or hear it a minimum of 7-9 times, even if they need or want it. How can you make sure that you are the one who the client chooses to do business with? 1- Focus on building relationships This brings us to the next important change to the way successful entrepreneurs market themselves for the purpose of securing business. We need to be focusing on the relationships we are creating with both our current and potential clients to ensure long term success. We have all heard of the importance of CRM or customer relationship marketing, right? This is where we, as business owners, focus on how we interact with each customer in an effort to solidify our long term relationship with them. We know that people do business with people they like. So it behooves us to take the extra step to show that we truly care about our clients by asking them questions about themselves, their families, their businesses. And from that information send birthday and anniversary cards, surprise them by sharing an article pertinent to one of their interests, touch base with them regularly via phone, notes, email, newsletter, and an in-person meeting regularly. Does this take work? You bet! But, the rewards of loyal, repeat clients will be more than worth your effort. Relationships are forged one opportunity at a time. They can be solidified in person most effectively, but certainly can also be done via notes, emails, and phone calls when your clients are across the continent or around the globe. Get out and meet new people on a regular basis. Get to know them by showing genuine interest in them and ask questions. Then proudly and confidently share with them what you do (your solution). Then follow up with them and thank them for their time. Send them your newsletter each month. Spend time nurturing your relationships. 2- Focus on a niche DIFFERENTIATING yourself is key in this area! Most business owners think that the more products or services, they offer, the higher their chances of being successful, when actually the opposite is true. Those who specialize in a niche market– zeroing in on the needs of a certain niche in the marketplace end up being most successful. The goal is to find your niche (identify a group of people whom share similar characteristics that you would like to serve with your products or services), narrow it down as far as possible and then hit it with all youve got. The narrower your market the broader your chances of success in this hypercompetitive, over-communicated to society. In short, specialization or niche marketing implies superiority. Niche marketing is the wave of the future! The greater the competition, the greater the need for specialists. What will YOUR specialization or niche be? Where are they? Make sure you show up there. What do they read? Be sure to write an article for that publication. Become so entrenched in serving your niche, that you are clearly seen as the expert and thus, the person your prospects trust and do business with. 3- Become an expert! Consumers (whether businesses or personal) want to minimize any mistakes. So they will trust and eventually do business with those professionals who are seen as the expert in their chosen field. You should make it your main purpose to position yourself and be an expert. You do this by reading, researching and investigating various aspects of your industry. This work will give you the valuable information you need to take your new found expert status to the next level. Once you have enough foundational information related to your product or service, you need to be writing articles, speaking at events attended by your niche, and continually getting your name out there in the marketplace as an expert. Ask yourself, What free report(s) could I create and make available to my prospects? What information related to your product or service are your prospects wondering about? What could you research and provide to them that they would appreciate? Share your industry knowledge and expertise with others. It is probably one of the most successful ways to be seen as an expert and inevitably be the one chosen to do business with. Can all of this be done overnight? Certainly not. However, taking small steps on a daily basis will get you closer to your marketing yourself to a thriving business full of clients who are all too happy to tell others about you. You can do it! The Command to Work

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

By Alan D Campbell The apostle Paul gave a clear command that Christians should work in II Thessalonians 3:10-12: “10For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 11For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. 12Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.” (KJV) Failure to obey the command to work leads to the breakup of families, the neglect of children, and disorderly conduct. This article explains the importance of obeying the command to work and the consequences of refusing to work. God and Jesus Christ Work God worked before he rested. He made the heaven and earth in six days before he rested on the seventh day. How can we rest if we do not work? Jesus Christ clearly stated that he worked and his father worked in John 5:17: “But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.” (KJV) If we are to be the children of God, we must follow the example of God our father and Jesus Christ our elder brother and work. Pauls Judgment About People Who Refuse to Work The apostle Paul indicated that anyone who refused to work was in a very bad spiritual condition. Here are his words from 1 Timothy 5:8: “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.” (KJV) An infidel is an unbeliever–one who does not believe in Jesus Christ and the Bible. Being a true believer in Jesus Christ requires a great deal more than just passive belief or acceptance of Jesus Christ as savior. As the apostle James wrote, we show our faith by our works (James 2:18). While the book of James focuses a great deal on works of compassion for others who are truly in need, Paul shows that providing for one’s family is one of the most basic works of faith. Why Are We Are to Work? We should work to provide for our own needs and not be a burden on other people. The apostle Paul gave this command to the church in Thessalonians 4:11-12: “11And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; 12That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.” (KJV) We should also work to have the resources to give to the work of God and to other people. In addition, we should work to reduce the temptation to sin. Idleness is the devils playground. If we become idle, we can fall into many temptations. Some people might even be tempted to steal to meet their physical needs. There is a riddle that asks when is a door not a door. The answer is when it is ajar. When is a thief not a thief? A thief is still a thief when he is not currently stealing because he is between jobs. A thief is no longer a thief when he has had a change of heart and wants to give to others. There have been former thieves in the Church of God. The apostle Paul gave instructions to former thieves inEphesians 4:28: “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.” (KJV) Again the writings of Paul and James fit together very well. Paul shows that Christians should work not only to provide for one’s family, but also to have the resources to give to those who are in need. The writings of James also emphasize providing for others in need. For example, here is what James wrote in James 2:15-17: “15If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.” (KJV) Even people who are retired and healthy need to keep busy doing such things as volunteer work. We need a sense of purpose in our physical lives as well as in our spiritual lives. Hobbies and recreation such as fishing and golf are not as fun when they become a daily routine instead of occasional recreation from a life of work. Conclusion God works. He rules the universe from his throne. God does not have an eternal retirement plan. We will work as kings and priests in the Kingdom of God (Revelation 5:10). We must learn to work in this life to provide for ourselves and our families, to give to the less fortunate, and to support the work of God. Alan D. Campbell lives in Brandon, Florida.
