Do You Suffer From “Missing Mother Syndrome”?

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Carna Zacharias-Miller Is this you? - You feel lost, out of place, and unsafe in this world - There is an underlying sadness in your life, even if nothing is wrong - You tend to feel lonely and depressed, especially at other people’s “Happy Family” gatherings - You hate your body or are unsure about “being a woman” - You have abandonment or anger issues that hurt your relationships - You experience social stress - you either try to stay invisible, or you have a compulsion to be in the limelight - Any major crisis in your life, like a divorce, job loss, or bereavement, throws you right back into the painful past - There is a lot of fear, anxiety, or even guilt and shame in your life - You feel homesick without knowing where “home” is - You are trying too hard to be happy and “perfect” - You take rejection very personally - You believe that everybody else gets their act together - except for you If you recognize yourself in this description, you could suffer from what I call Missing Mother - Syndrome. And yes, even though you had a mother, physically, she still can be missing if she was (mentally) ill, aloof, cold, non-caring, or even cruel. You might think you are alone in the whole wide world with your painful emotions, but there are many, many women with the same condition. It’s just not party talk, so you might never guess that the smiling, pretty, successful woman you are talking to is in fact miserable, angry and lonesome on the inside. It is very difficult to heal yourself with this condition. Get help! Besides the traditional therapies, there are many wonderful, often short-term, not financially draining alternative therapies, like Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), TAT, Energy Healing, Emotrance, or Zensight and Z-point. Carna Zacharias-Miller, EFT-CC, EFT-ADV, is an EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) practitioner in Tallahassee, FL. She offers live and telephone sessions for stress/fears/weight loss/trauma/self-esteem. Her specialty is the emotional and spiritual healing of women who suffer from childhood rejection and abandonment by the mother. Retail Florists

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Seth Miller Flowers from different farms all over the world find their way into the market through importers and wholesale buyers. These dealers then distribute the flowers to the retail florists in malls or neighborhood shops. Retail florists are usually located within one district of the city, the one nearest to the dealer or ports. Close distances to the sources ensure the freshness of the flowers and lessen the cost of transport and risk of damage and spoilage. With faster transportation, improved logistical infrastructures for importing and exporting goods, and the growing diversity of tastes and preferences of those who populate cities, more exotic and hard-to-come-by flowers are being made available in most retail florists. Competition among these florists has also encouraged each one to offer specializations and expertise. Some florists hold diploma courses in design and boast of awards won in national and international competitions in flower arrangements. This has led to the creation of various flower arrangements available for the customers to choose from. Selling flowers has become a lucrative business as people are finding more reasons and occasions to use flowers. Some retail florists have transformed their businesses and gone to the next level by branding their products. They sell what are known as designer blooms. These retail florists have branches or franchises across the country, and even in other parts of the world. Giving flowers are not the cheapest way to express your feelings or convey a message. Designer blooms have given retail florists the prestige of jewelry or clothes designers. Retail florists who have gone into the business of designer blooms offer top-of-the-line flowers suited for very special occasions or as gifts for celebrities and very important clients and bosses. Florists provides detailed information on Florists, Retail Florists, Florist Delivery, Online Florists and more. Florists is affiliated with Best Florists Online. If You Live In Bear Country, It May Be Time To Take Down Your Bird Feeders

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Rob Huff If you live in bear country, it may be time to take down your bird feeders That doesnt mean that you have to give up on attracting birds into your yard. You simply have to change your tactics. Here in New Hampshire it is finally starting to warm up. Unfortunately, that means that my bird feeders need to come down. The reasonbears! As bears wake up they begin looking for food. Bird feeders are a tempting treat-too tempting for a hungry bear to pass up. Attracting bears onto your property creates many problems for you, your neighbors and the bears. Bears have a strong sense of smell and will easily locate your bird feeders. Once they find them, they will destroy them to get to the food inside. Once they have found food around your house, they will continue to come back for more. They will also be attracted to your trash and anything else they can find. After they have eaten everything they could find in your yard, they will move onto your neighbors yard. Once this cycle of feeding begins, it is difficult to break. Bears that become accustomed to approaching houses and people often become chronic nuisances. It is highly likely that they will end up being hit by cars, shot illegally by people who misunderstand their intentions and suffer diet deficiencies from continued consumption of improper foods. I hate taking my bird feeders down because I love watching the wild birds that they attract. At this time of year many birds are migrating through New Hampshire and I enjoy seeing these new birds. So I have had to come up with new ways to attract wild birds into my yard. Plant a bird-friendly garden. You dont need a large yard to create a bird garden. Planting a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers can provide good nesting sites, winter shelter, hiding places from predators, and natural food supplies that are available all year round. When planning your bird-friendly garden, dont forget to add a few flowers for the hummingbirds. Just add water. Actually, you can attract more birds with water than with birdseed. Many birds will not be interested in the birdseed that you offer, but almost all birds are looking for fresh water to drink and bathe in. In fact, most birds will find a well-maintained birdbath irresistible. If you want to attract even more birds, add movement to your water source with a dripper or sprayer. Put out nest boxes. There are more than 50 species of North American breeding birds that select or construct a cavity for their nest. A few bird houses placed around your yard will not only go a long way to support the population of cavity-nesting birds, but it can be gratifying for us birdwatchers too. Enjoy the great outdoorsgo bird watching. Get out there and find the birds around you. Watching birds in their natural habitat will give you a new a new perspective on how birds live and interact with nature. Plan a trip to your nearest hiking trail or park. All you need is a pair of binoculars and a sense of adventure. Dont blame the bears for forcing you to take down your bird feeders. Instead, enjoy attracting wild birds and bird watching in new ways. Rob Huff and his family have enjoyed attracting wild birds into their yard for many years. This love of watching wild birds has grown into a hobby that the whole family enjoys together. You Might Rethink The Fight

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Johnny Cosmo Fights are avoidable. If youre defending your honor or just caught a guy with his hand in your back pocket, you may need to defend yourself. But if a guy is looking at your woman, bats his eyes at her, or is talking to her when you return from the bathroom, be cool. Thats the price of having an attractive date. This is not your test, this is hers. A woman whos with you on a date owes you the respect of some undivided attention. If she engages another guy in conversation, laughs hysterically at his jokes, or puts her hand on his forearm when talking, find a bartender and whisper check please. Im not the jealous type, but Im also not there to feed her food and liquor so she can work the room while I stand in the shadows financing the event. I judge a womans character, not by how she treats me, but by how she treats others. Is she rude or patronizing? Does she have a temper with our waiter? If she makes me wait at the bar while she goes outside to smoke a cigarette with ten people she doesnt know and takes thirty minutes to do it Ill know shes inconsiderate and that this is only the tip of the iceberg. If she takes a card from a guy while Im out with her, I wont give her a lecture, but I may hand her ten bucks for her cab ride home. If you just met someone and the same scenario happens, you dont have the same claim to her time and attention. Once she downs your drink, shes a free agent. Punching a guy in the face for hitting on this village bar fly is out of line and dangerous: if you win the fight, youre an idiot that just burned a bridge at one of your hangoutsand it doesnt mean shes going home with you. If you lose a fight, double disgrace; you spent a few bucks and a few minutes with a girl and tried to impress her with your short temper. Now the barstools are on the floor and youre holding whats left of your shirt. Enjoy the ride home. You can and should avoid challenging a drunk. Fights are a mood kill, not an aphrodisiac. Secret of Strategy - Part 1

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Paul Lemberg A step-by-step guide to creating a growth strategy based on your current situation and future possibilities. I’ll bet you think you already have a strategy. And well you may, but strategy as a concept is just like love: much used and little understood. Many businesses (and that includes small entrepreneurs, large corporations, non-profits, community organizations, governments, NGOsthe works) neither know what strategy really is, nor how to get one. And even if you do, in fact, have a strategy-is it the right one? The best one? This is so important-marketing guru Jay Abraham says-and I agree-a superior strategy badly executed will beat a bad strategy well executed, any day. It’s easy to say, “This is big company stuff. We know what we need-why should we do all the extra work.” While a “strategy-less” group of marketing tactics may work well and produce good results, is it taking your business in the best direction? You may be making money, but are you making the most money possible? Could another suite of tactics implementing a superior strategy produce far better results? Which brings me to the point of this two-part article: how to formulate strategy. In the next 1500 words, I’m going to present the first half of a basic system for identifying high-impact strategies in your business. (Just the first half? Yes. While I strive to make this as simple as possible, it still takes a bit of explaining, and editors and readers alike detest long articles!) So Part 2 will finish the outline, and in future articles, I will discuss each system component in finer detail. Let’s begin with a working definition of strategy. Strategy is the guiding principle on which are based a series of interlinked decisions regarding the selection and deployment of resources and tactics, whose purpose is realizing a vision and achieving decisive objectives in a competitive and changing environment. This definition tells us a few things: The purpose of all strategic decisions is achieving your vision and “decisive” or critical-to-purpose objectives. Strategy is about selecting specific resources and tactics to get the desired result. Strategy is not static; it is decisions in a series, and evolves continuously over time. Strategy is broad and all-encompassing. With that in mind, here are the 8 steps to formulating strategy: Set your vision Gather environmental and competitive intelligence Take stock of your organization’s strengths and weaknesses Select your “grand strategy” Establish decisive objectives Rate and rank your “SWOTs” Match your internal and external factors to identify strategic alternatives Select specific strategies for implementation Of course, there is one last step: turning your strategy into tactics and game plans, and execute. We won’t get into that in this article. Step 1. Establish your vision. People complicate the idea of vision. A vision is simply a story describing how you want things to be in the future. Some people can tell these stories easily-they know exactly where they want to be and what it will “look” like. Others need help. The best approach is to answer a series of questions regarding what your organization does, who are it’s clients or beneficiaries, what its impact is, how big it is, where it is, how it operates, when all these things will occur, and so on. As a result of answering these questions, your vision will emerge. Of course, you may already have a vision. If so, now is the time to insure that it is relevant and powerful. The test of a good vision is if it inspires; not only you and your management team, but all of your stakeholders: your partners, employees, clients, investors, vendors, lenders, your community, your government-and perhaps the public at large. A great vision inspires, and it also provides direction. Every action you take should further your vision. If it doesn’t, don’t do it. Step 2. Gather environmental and competitive intelligence. To develop the best strategies you must understand the world outside your organization. Quantify and qualify, not just absolutes, but trends. And importantly-identify changes in the status quo. Key areas for focus include competitors, technology, market size and trends, your clients’ industry health, macroeconomic trends, availability of key resources (people and materials) government regulations and other political considerations, and changes in demographics and psychographics-like customer taste. Devise relevant measures for each of these key external areas. For instance, examine your competitors for revenue, profit and market share growth (or decline), product and service changes, shifts in marketing and sales strategy, changes in geographic distribution, strategic alliances, and major customer announcements. Macroeconomic factors include the obvious such as interest and employment rates and trends, production and consumption statistics, along with finer grained-industry issues such as new home buying-which impacts a wide variety of businesses, or defense spending-which impacts a completely different set of sectors. Step 3. Take stock of your organization’s strengths and weaknesses Now it is time to shine the light on your organization. Examine each functional area looking for strengths and weaknesses. Identify strengths that will help the company realize its vision, and weaknesses that will impede its goals. The following is a starter list of focus areas: Ability to get new prospects (Marketing) Ability to get new clients (Sales) Products and services, both existing and those in R&D. Finance or Money, including cash flow, access to capital, revenues, profits, ROI Leadership, including values and vision alignment, decisive objectives People, including skills inventory, staffing levels, employee loyalty, compensation Other areas to examine include:Client satisfaction Client services Logistics Competitive positioning Unique Client Proposition Management team Administration Step 4: Select your Grand Strategies. This “grand strategy” approach is based upon industry/product revenue growth rates. It is specific to a business unit with one major industry and/or product focus. If your business is more complex, you may repeat the process for each focus sector. First, consider your industry and product sector growth rate. Is it growing or declining? Second, consider your competitive strength within that sector. For this analysis Competitive Strength has two components, the size and trend of your market share, and your organization’s financial strength; specifically either cash flow from operations, or access to capital. To simplify: strong market share + strong finances = strong competitive position. Either strong market share or strong finances = average competitive position. Neither strong market share nor strong finances = weak competitive position. This defines a two-by-three matrix of strategic choices from which to select your grand strategy. The exact choice you make will be dictated by the specifics of your situation: sector strength and competitive strength, along with your stated vision and purpose. Choose from the list which best describes your business: Strong sector, strong competitive position. This means that you are in a growing market, hold a commanding market position, and have cash with which to maneuver. Your strategic choices include: Market strategy to increase demand and sales for existing products and services, in existing and new markets Marketing strategy to increase market penetration for existing products and services and capture greater share. Enhance or extend existing products and services; add-ons, backends, strategic joint ventures. Gain control over distribution - bring external sales inside. Take sales from distributors. Gain control over suppliersAcquisition, merger, or joint-ventures with competitors Develop strategic partnerships to increase distribution, or gain new products. Develop related products and services for existing customer base - backend strategies. Strong sector, average competitive position Here you are in a growing market, but have either a commanding position, but limited cash-or vice versa. The exact choice available to you depend on your situation. You can: Seek underserved niches: move into small, defined and profitable markets. Marketing strategy to increase market penetration for existing products and services and capture greater share. Enhance or extend existing products and services; add-ons, backends, strategic joint ventures Strategic partnerships - seek products/services for existing customers Exploit assets via joint ventures and host-beneficiary relationships Develop related products and services for existing customer base - backend strategies. Increased marketing penetration via distributors and 3rd parties Get more money: raise capital via debt or equity Strong sector, weak competitive position You are in a strong sector, but have relatively small market share, and limited or no cash. Your choices include: Seek underserved niches: move into small, defined and profitable markets. Marketing strategy to increase market penetration for existing products and services and capture greater share. Strategic partnerships - seek products/services for existing customers Develop products and services for existing customer base - backend strategies. Sell your client base to a competitor or cooperator; or reposition your existing products to appeal to new customer types. Sell the product line and use cash to reposition remaining assets Sell the company Weak sector, strong competitive position In this case, you dominate a weak market and have cash to exploit your position. You should: Add related products and services for existing customer base - backend strategies. Add un-related products and services for existing customer base - backend strategies. Add new products and services for new customer base Create joint ventures in unrelated markets Weak sector, average competitive position. You are in a mediocre position in a weak market. Depending on your exact circumstances, you can retreat, use what’s left of your cash to buy your way out with new products, or try to enroll a strong partner. Choices include: Reduce costs however you can. Add related products and services for existing customer base - backend strategies. Add new products and services for new customer base Seek to dominate the smallest definition of your market using low-cost / no-cost strategies. Create strategic partnerships and joint ventures Weak sector, weak competitive position Sorry to say, you are in a bad place. In a word-retreat! You can do this by: Reduce costs however you can. Sell product line Sell company If you don’t want to liquidate, seek to expand your marketing using low-cost / no-cost marketing strategies - but this may be a losing proposition. Also, as above, attempt to create strategic partnerships and joint ventures, but it may be difficult to attract partners to a market with poor fundamentals. At this point you might say, “sell the customers? Sell the company? No way. I’m holding on.” That just isn’t a strategic point of view. Strategy says you can make more money doing something else-so you best start thinking about it. In general, these choices are listed from most attractive to least. Your organization’s best choices will be based on your particular circumstances. By now you have formulated a vision, gathered analyzed your external environment and organization, identified relevant strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, and begun to zero in on a grand strategy. That should keep you busy for a while. In The Secrets of Strategy, Part II, we’ll complete the process. Remember-you don’t need a strategy. But having one increases your chances of generating the greatest profits from your resources. After all, that is the whole point of strategy.— Copyright 2004 Quantum Growth Coaching. Juicing With Whole Foods

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Romie Walker Juicing with whole foods can be a natural remedy for many ailments. These natural whole foods are available almost everywhere today. Most of the supermarkets offer a very nice selection of organic fruits and vegetables. You can grow many of these wonderful whole foods in your own organic garden. Juicing with these whole foods is an easy and proven way to improve your health with this natural remedy. It is unfortunate that most people in the world don’t eat right these days, especially Americans and Europeans. You can understand unhealthy eating when there is poverty but in our land of plenty unhealthy eating is a choice. We choose to consume processed foods with little or no nutrients or vitamins. The processed foods are popular because they are fast. Juicing whole foods is fast and provides a natural remedy for many health issues. Consuming processed and fast foods has created a multi-billion dollar industry of selling supplements and vitamins. Think about this, we spend our hard earned money on fancy processed foods then spend more of our money on supplements and vitamins. Now I don’t know about you but I would rather purchase foods and use juicing to make quick healthy foods for my family. Most juicing recipes requires less than 15 minutes, preparation time, processing and clean up. Many of the prescription drugs taken today are the result of not consuming a diet high in whole foods. Of course if you work for a pharmaceutical company this might be a good thing. Thankfully there is a movement in the western world seeking natural whole food with natural remedies to solve many of our health problems. This movement to healthier foods has created a demand for these foods and the supermarkets have responded with more organic foods. Juicing is an excellent way to consume the foods in large quantities that offer a natural remedy for many ailments. To really understand how food can be a natural remedy we need to look at what natural food is and what it does for our bodies. Food provides the fuel for your body, providing nutrition and energy. Good, unprocessed foods, strengthens the immune system. It lets our body fight off diseases and heal. Simply put, to have a strong immune system we must consume a healthy diet, which is a natural remedy at its best. There are over 3500 disease fighting phytonutrients in whole foods, which are only available through whole food juicing with the proper equipment. Manufactured supplements can only provide 150 of these phytonutrients. Most of us have heard all of our life that an apple a day will keep the doctor away. Well with whole food juicing there is a lot of truth to this saying. When you make whole food juice using all of the apple, skin, stem and seeds you get all of the phytonutrients locked up in the apple. Also, you will get all of the fiber, which is a requirement for a healthy diet. The whole food juice from an apple with all of its vitamins, phytonutrients and fiber is truly a natural health remedy. The vitamin C in oranges has always been known, but when oranges are prepared in whole food juicing the vitamin C can increase as much a 400%. In whole food juicing you use everything, even the seeds, except the zest. Knowing that these vitamins and phytonutrients found in whole food juicing serves as a natural remedy to many illnesses should lead a person to examine their diet and add whole grains, whole fruits and whole vegetables, which are all natural sources of fiber. Oats, such as those found in normal breakfast oatmeal are a natural remedy for high cholesterol and can be used in whole food juicing. Jalapeno peppers, high in ironmore iron per ounce than beef liver are a great of source of vitamin C, and actually contain more vitamin C per gram than equivalent citrus fruits, with the additional benefit of spicing up a good whole food juicing meal and adding some zest. The best way to protect our bodies with natural remedies is to improve our eating habits with whole food juicing. How To Use Yoga In Your Weight Loss For Great Results

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Jed Baguio Yoga can be put to good use for taking off excess pounds through the power of creating a state of mental and physical well being. Promoting a healthy lifestyle and when combined with a calorie reduction can help to speed up your weight loss is the basic tenets of Yoga. It also increases your metabolism by increasing the caloric burning process. Using more calories than you take in is all the basis of weight loss. It will allow you to increase your ability to concentrate and focus. What regulates your metabolism is your thyroid. Thyroid is responsible for the chemical processes that transform food into energy. A series of twisting poses are used in Yoga to help you to stimulate the work flow of the internal organs. This will cause your metabolism to increase. This can also burn more calories which will eventually cause you to have a lower body weight. Another side effect is that it will help to improve your circulation and increase your energy level. Helping to stimulate the metabolism is combining the various back bends with the forward bends. The poses that affect the neck region can be helpful in stimulating the thyroid if the weight problem is caused by a hormonal imbalance. Camel, rabbit, plow, bridge and head stand are the poses that will help the most. Going quickly between the various poses can help to accelerate the weight loss. You should beware though that those seriously overweight may find some of these poses extremely difficult and should start slowly with the easier poses and add others as they become more confident in the easier ones. To increase muscle strengthening, you can use standing poses such as the warrior. These will help to create higher endurance. These can also increase your caloric usage. What is best with all Yoga practices is a gradual approach. The long term effects on your weight loss regime will become evident and even more so the inner peace and general well feeling that Yoga will promote within you. What You Need to Know About a University of Phoenix Online Degree

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Hal McIver The University of Phoenix Online offers degree programs in several disciplines. Depending on your professional pursuits and interests, you can opt for an Undergraduate, Graduate, or Doctorate course in business management, business administration, nursing and health care management, social and behavioral sciences, and education. It is important that you carefully select the program that is most suitable to you from the numerous online programs offered by the University. To enroll, you need to ensure that you have the basic configuration set on your computer, a reliable Internet service provider, and a phone connection. The entire process is online, from registration to the completion of the degree program. This places an added responsibility on you because, unlike a classroom situation where the learning process is set, in an online situation you have to decide the pace at which you want to complete the program. All the study material is in the form of text only, and it is important that you save the material for review later. The advantage of the online medium, however, is that you do not miss any part of the learning process. All your interactions will be in the form of email messages, and most of them will be with your instructor directly. The instructor is a member of a highly qualified faculty at the University, and is a practitioner in that particular field. Since the only channel of communication is through the internet, you will not have any face-to-face interaction as you would expect in a classroom situation. Therefore, you need to make the most of the email exchanges with your instructor as well as other professionals in course of the online discussion forums and question-answer sessions. Each course has duration of 5-6 weeks, and you can opt to take breaks within this duration. However, you must avoid a situation where the breaks prove to be detrimental to the progress of the course. Relationship before Function

Monday, January 21st, 2008

By Michael Tummillo As many are aware, I’m quite an advocate for the growing house church “movement” and love helping others to establish churches in their homes, coffee shops, office breakrooms, etc. I’m having a ball doing this and it’s VERY rewarding. I was recently looking at Luke Chapter 10 verses 1-9 and there are some principles found there that will not only prove beneficial to the “house churchers” among us, but ANY Christian whose heart is set on advancing the Kingdom of God. Let’s take a look at the Amplified version. Here it is: 1…the Lord chose and appointed seventy others and sent them out ahead of Him, two by two, into every town and place where He Himself was about to come (visit). 2And He [Jesus] said to them, The harvest indeed is abundant [there is much ripe grain], but the farmhands are few. Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3Go your way; behold, I send you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. 4Carry no purse, no provisions bag, no [change of] sandals; refrain from [retarding your journey by] saluting and wishing anyone well along the way. 5Whatever house you enter, first say, Peace be to this household! [Freedom from all the distresses that result from sin be with this family]. 6And if anyone [worthy] of peace and blessedness is there, the peace and blessedness you wish shall come upon him; but if not, it shall come back to you. 7And stay on in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house. 8Whenever you go into a town and they receive and accept and welcome you, eat what is set before you; 9And heal the sick in it and say to them, The kingdom of God has come close to you. Known for his ministry as a House Church planter, author and speaker Tony Dale emphasizes the fact that House Church is NOT merely a gathering or even a location; it’s a way of life. As he says, there must surely be something more to this than exchanging pews for couches. How can it be anything else for Christianity is not merely another of the world’s great religions; it’s a moment-to-moment relationship with the Creator. Bearing this in mind, it’s more easily conceivable that wherever we Christians find ourselves at any moment, that may well be the spot where we can begin to influence people for the Kingdom and see lives transformed. Verse 1: We see that Jesus “sent them out ahead of Him.” That means they went FIRST but He would soon be coming onto the scene. As disciples ourselves, have you found that to be the case today as well? All we have to be is available! Verse 2: Despite having assembled an outreach team of 72 (some say even more), Jesus laments that there’s so much work to do and 72 is simply not enough. We need more of us! Verse 3: The team is reminded that they are vulnerable and are about to engage in Spiritual Warfare. Yet, they were trained. The call to serve is really a call to prepare. Have you been preparing? Verse 4: They’re instructed not to bring anything with them because they won’t be staying. They are also told, essentially, not to dilly-dally. There was to be no chit-chatting with others they meet along the way; they were on a mission, after all. Instead, they were to keep a look out for someone VERY important. Who? Read on. Verse 5: Jesus told them something very interesting. He said, “Whatever house you enter, first say, Peace be to this household!” Today, He might have said, “When you go to the office, the plant, Starbuck’s, class, a Chamber of Commerce mixer, BE to them the expression of God that you are and let them experience the Peace of Christ through you. If you feel that same peace returned to you by another, THIS is the person you can build a church with (minister to, pray for, etc.)!” Here’s a tip: Instead of inviting these people to church - asking them to abandon THEIR culture in exchange for YOUR church’s friendly confines - why not get to know THEM in THEIR world? Chances are, they’ll gladly invite family and friends to meet you and… POOF…instant Church! I heard about an East Indian Christian woman who was walking around a village, praying. When someone asked what she was doing, she said she was looking for people to pray for. She was invited in by many. Eventually, she established 50 house churches, that in a nation with millions of gods (note the lower case “g”). Verse 6: Jesus added, “And if anyone of peace and blessedness is there, the peace and blessedness you wish shall come upon him…” In other words, if that person is someone you can work with, you’ll know it by the Spirit! In Acts 16:14, Paul was preaching by the river and one who was listening was a woman named Lydia. The verse says, “She was [already] a worshiper of God, and the Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.” No, she wasn’t a Christian - and she may have not yet even heard the story of Jesus and His Kingdom message. Yet, she was referred to as “a worshipper of God.” She could have been a Muslim, a Satanist, a New Age guru, a Buddhist…she was probably not a Jew because it was the Sabbath and she was not in the temple AND she was working besides. Scripture clearly says, however, says she was a worshipper of God and a Church was started at her house. I’m convinced that the Lord’s primary method of evangelism was probably not open-air crusades. Yes, we have a few examples of that, but I think there were far more one-on-one situations - the kind of opportunities constantly available to you and me today as well. ALL Christians can penetrate pockets of darkness by crossing over to where we are no longer “culturally comfortable.” We have to get out of our Christian ghetto and rub shoulders with others in order to find those “worshippers of God.” They’re out there, trust me. Personally, there was a time in my life when I was quite a devout “worshipper of God.” Christian girls often mistook me for one of “them.” Sadly, the “god” to whom I paid my homage was named “Mike.” It was ME all along. I KNEW there was a GOD “out there” but all I saw around me was Religion - not relationship - and condemnation. Trying to “be good” seemed impossible for me to do no matter how hard I tried. Sure, I heard the old Bible stories, but I wasn’t meeting anyone who testified of what He was doing NOW, at this moment in time, and that He wanted an intimate relationship with me. I remember thinking He was mad at me and, when I REALLY messed up, I was that much farther away from Him than I had been. Regardless, I still worshipped Him, too scared to do otherwise. Sadly, there are millions like that! The harvest is abundant, as Jesus said. Multitudes need to know that God is not “out there” but wants to live large “IN THEM,” for WE are the temple of the Holy Spirit, that same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead. Verses 7 and 8: They were told to “…stay on in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house. Whenever you go into a town and they receive and accept and welcome you, eat what is set before you…” Stay with them? Imagine it’s Tom’s first day at work and a fellow named Jerry comes by and invites him to join the gang at the local bar to have a TGIF celebration. A Christian, Tom hardens his brow and says to Jerry, “No, thank you, I’m a Christian and I don’t go to places like that.” What happened? Tom hasn’t merely turned down Jerry’s invitation; he’s turned Jerry down, turned him off and turned him away in the process. How much more effective would it have been had Tom RECEIVED Jerry’s hospitality - the only kind he knew how to offer, by the way. He was being KIND to Tom - a godly quality - and may well be a worshipper of God, the best he knew how at any rate. He was extending his hand of friendship and inviting Tom into his world to meet his friends, maybe even family at some point. “Come and eat and drink with us, TOM!” was what he was saying. But Tom said, “No!” A door had been shut by Tom’s reaction, when Jerry had graciously opened his culture to him. Remember verse one? JESUS is planning to show up but He’s sending out His team FIRST. Guys like Tom. Guys like us. He allowed Tom to have that job, not merely so he could eat or pay bills, but as a means for advancing the Kingdom of God. Jesus WILL show up, but not if Christians go springing religion and self-righteousness on everyone and squelching those Divine opportunities. Granted, there are times when we MUST graciously bow out. Time constraints might cause us to say, “Sounds like fun, but can I take a raincheck?” Leave the door open. Now, if Jerry’s gang had been going to a topless club, by all means, use discernment. “Jerry, I’d love to hang out with you guys but I’m not comfortable in places like that…can we go somewhere else? How ’bout lunch tomorrow…my treat?” He would probably respect that and, at the very least, invite you to something more to your liking another time. Verse 8 essentially encourages us to move into THEIR environment. Jesus is our example of that. Didn’t He leave HIS culture for the sake of planet Earth? A lady asked me if I’d speak at her Brisket, Beer and Bible Study. I didn’t hesitate to commit myself. The people she said she’ll be inviting are kids who’ve done drugs, been in jail, people who don’t feel accepted in churches. If like-minded Christians would join forces in a similar manner, we could have an incredible impact on our community. (Anybody care to throw a party?) When you get there - to that place outside your element - love those you find there. Let the expression of Christ flow through you. I once officiated a wedding that was held in a bar. Everyone, including the groom, was sipping beer before the wedding even began. That was the most enjoyable wedding I can remember. I mingled and “worked the crowd.” Afterward, I sat down and ate with an Hispanic man about my age, with a shaved head and a 2-foot braided pony tail hanging down his back. We enjoyed each other’s company, laughed quite a bit as I recall. I told him how to reach me and made myself available. Another man asked me if I made a pretty good living doing weddings. When I told him that I don’t charge, he grabbed a $50 bill from his wallet and said, “Here ya go, I need a blessing and I believe in reapin’ and sowin’.” The next day, the bride came by my office and gleefully said “everyone just loved you at the wedding.” Verse 9: Jesus says, “heal the sick in it and say to them, the Kingdom of God has come close to you…” Be discerning and see if there’s a need where God could step in. As I minister in nursing homes and when I’ve gone to jails and hospitals, I’ve NEVER had a single person say they did NOT want me to pray for them. What I HAVE heard is people who say, “I don’t know how to pray.” I’ve even seen people cry while I prayed and afterward admit to me that NO ONE has EVER prayed for them. Imagine! Sure, we could offer to literally pray for the sick as we enter into these strange cultures, but how about those with sick marriages or sick finances, sick emotions, a sick spirit, sick of being unemployed, or just sick of being addicted and failing all the time? The verse says to tell them about the Kingdom of God. It doesn’t tell us to tell them they’re sinners. They already know that, I assure you. Tell them there’s a King who loves them and cares about them. The woman at the well is a grand example of that. Jesus said to her, “Does anyone condemn you? Neither do I.” He’s been called a Friend of Sinners, more comfortable with the down and outers than with the religious crowd. He loved them and they loved Him; the self righteous got His indignation. We can always find a way to bless and give hope. People are too often being cursed by the Church, condemned and reminded of how bad they are. “You’re a sinner, bud.” We forget that, if not for God’s grace, so are we. Just as God said to Adam, “Who told you that you were naked?”, I can hear Him asking the Church today, “Who told you that you were divorced, illegitimate, a fornicator, a drunkard…who told you - a child that I love - one I sent My Son to die for…that you were the scum of the Earth? I call you My friend, My child, My warrior, my priest, my chosen one. Who told you all those lies about yourself?” Let us remember to DEMONSTRATE the presence of God before our preaching will ever be received. Spurgeon said, “Before you give a man a tract, wrap it in a sandwich.” The same principle applies. It’s called “Relationship before Function.” They want to know how much you care before they care how much you know. As God intervenes, your testimony, your ministry will be more than welcome.
